We need a modern day Gandhi

Absolutely no disrespect to Gandhi himself. He will forever be a legend among human beings. My point is we need a modern day Gandhi to fulfill the role of leading a non-violent movement. The last one happened to be black and, most likely for that reason, was killed. It's not something you'd call a safe job.

The OP, yourself CTHULUTAUR and mowgli_smash and even buttdude, all indicate a male persona is desired, perhaps even the required remedy.
We can only carry so much, as individuals at any given moment but if you're compelled to be Ghandi or Martin Luther King you shouldn't be here.
If you're seeking these type of Leaders, you should become one by simple action and thought every day.
Ghandi and Dr. King, they were not perfect. You don't have to be them, or be perfect, to do great things.
You need to find the best way to be you, in your daily life and then let it expand to others.
Yes, CTHULUTAUR, a large population are behind bars so let your passion lead you! I'm only one person and I'm all about demolishing Private Prisons in the US! Get busy!

And we don't need a Gandhi, WE need to collectively rise to the problems at hand, not wait for a savior to lead us because leaders of change are killed and once they die, their movement dies..

He's a state of mind. Think about it.

He was, at best, a man that created a following as events unfolded and opportunity aligned with words he spoke.
Mind you, his impact was profound but his prejudice/ignorance also held court in the 'now' while he lived.
Being mindful of those around you, in the present, isn't a cake walk and walking around like you have it all together is pretty cool but if you think you're all spiritual and deny somebody a simple anti-biotic then you might want to reconsider your state of mind.

His way certainly is. But he was much more than that also, we need the figure in addition.

I don't worship idols (figurines).
Edit: Why do you think we NEED a FIGURE?
2 Evilperson69 2013-12-06
Uhhh a public figure is very different from an idol or figurine. I probably should have mentioned that the "we" in this case is the whole country. I very much realize the fact that the people on this sub don't need any kind of public figurehead as a non-violent leader. What I was getting at was that, at least in my opinion, what the vast majority of our population needs (or at least could help), would be the figurehead. I used Gandhi for the meaning of the title, in reality I was thinking of someone much closer to MLK Jr.

I am Spartacus.
Edit: We all need to take responsibility.
2 Evilperson69 2013-12-06
I agree entirely, I just think a public figure would be immensely helpful for gathering actual numbers.
2 muffalettadiver 2013-12-06
Yea. I am not trying to be a dick either...
How's it all going to work? What steps can we take now? How can we all be Gandhi?
1 Evilperson69 2013-12-06
I would say there is no exact answer to your first question and the second 2 are on a person-to-person basis. Not to be the stereotypical philosopher but we all have to find our own way.
Maybe even the one figurehead that arises could shed light on those answers.
1 muffalettadiver 2013-12-06
I am of the opinion that the "figure head" can be a way of thinking or some sort of pervasive moral code set in natural law or something or something.
I have no idea. Life is complicated enough... Is the power we have limited to ideas only?
1 Evilperson69 2013-12-06
Don't get me wrong, I'm fully supportive of the idea that the figurehead could just be a way of thinking. The focus of my idea of an actual person was specifically pertaining to the willfully ignorant.

We do have a modern day ghandi.
It's called bitcoin. Now now, let me explain.
Bitcoin will literally change the world economy and help make smarter people have more money. Effect? Better people are more powerful and help everyone become better, in economical tangent.
Disagree? Debate me. I'm not scared.
2 Evilperson69 2013-12-06
Bitcoin isn't a person, doesn't really fit the title.
2 Ambiguously_Ironic 2013-12-06
You don't see a problem with bitcoin being valued in USD? Or with it requiring an internet connection/electricity?

No

Learning new concepts surrounding bitcoin and the way it operates make people smarter when they learn about the new things they can do with bitcoin.

It is still backed by nothing though and can be manipulated and controlled by some unseen person.
I want to go back to the days of gold and silver backing our currency, and also the barter system.
3 Demonspawn89 2013-12-06
Creating digital currency isn't going to set us free from an outdated system, we have to progress into a way of living based on logic and sustainability.
