The Secret Service just called me...
167 2015-02-10 by dovakin422
And asked me to come to their office to "talk" on Thursday. I honestly have 0 idea what this could be about. Aside from being extremely vocal about my anti-government views, I have not knowingly committed any crimes. At least any that would warrant the secret service being involved. I'm a little nervous to say the least, guys.

I'd respectfully decline their offer. There's nothing meeting with them can do for you besides satisfy your curiosity. There are several thousand ways that meeting with them can hurt you, however.
28 blueraider615 2015-02-10
Anything you say can, and will, be used against you in a court of law. Nothing you say can, or will, be used for you in a court of law.
2 DoctorButthurt 2015-02-10
Assuming you have the privilege of being judged in a court of law and not a dark room somewhere redacted.
13 IntellisaurDinoAlien 2015-02-10
Hmm, depending on the level of fascism of their nation phase 2 could be being bundled into a van as a confirmed 'problem'...
13 3domfighter 2015-02-10
That would have been phase 1 if they could have gotten away with it.
7 IntellisaurDinoAlien 2015-02-10
Probably right, yes.
13 Judous 2015-02-10
Completely agree

I don't think there's ever a good reason to talk to LEOs just for fun. Wait until they have a warrant. Or contact a lawyer and ask their opinion. NEVER EVER go in to talk to LEOs unprepared and without representation. Nothing good can come from that, it leaves you very vulnerable.
20 DarthStem 2015-02-10
Happened to me. Can conform. Fucking sucks
4 Akimb0Slice 2015-02-10
You mind describing what happened?
6 DarthStem 2015-02-10
Still in legal shit so not gonna go into super detail.
In the military. Got buddy fucked for doing something involving a camera and a female. Dude who rated on me has sent me some fucked up shit but I never said anything because I abide by the bro code as long as nobody is getting hurt.
So I get back to my command. Immediately get pulled into an interigation with investigators. They tell me the whole line of its not that big of a deal, blah blah blah. So I talk just to get it over with.
They end up totally fucking me by what I said but no other evidence except what I sent the guy. Now I'm getting court martialed for mostly political reasons.
6 Akimb0Slice 2015-02-10
Damn bro military drama sounds harsh as fuck
11 myWeedAccountMaaaaan 2015-02-10
It is. I had a similar situation except during my questioning I told my 1st Sergeant to mind his own fucking business. It got me arrested and my number for Staff Sergeant taken, but that's it. I've been a free man for years now. I'd never go back.
10 DarthStem 2015-02-10
The military isn't like it used to be. I would never recommend it to anybody now.
10 myWeedAccountMaaaaan 2015-02-10
I wouldn't either. I served before 9/11 as well as after and the difference is night and day.
1 MycTyson 2015-02-10
When I was going through basic and they told me missionary position or nothing, I immediately regretted the decision. Sodomy is illegal according to UCMJ as well, I bet OP made a porno dogging his girl, shared it and it made its' way up the chain of command.
Good luck /u/DarthStem !
1 DarthStem 2015-02-10
Negative. But they did remove the sodomy clause from the UCMJ when they repealed DADT.
3 MycTyson 2015-02-10
It's nice to know that it's now actually legal for them to have their heads shoved so far up their own asses.
7 DarthStem 2015-02-10
You have no idea. There is no standard for military justice. Just who your CO is, his political motivations and how he can use you as a political stepping stone by hanging you out to dry while he simultaneously backs up an E8 who had 14 counts of various degrees against him vice my 2 which are for the same thing and are less severe.
Rant over.
6 MrSenorSan 2015-02-10
Sounds just like the corporate world.
3 supercede 2015-02-10
Haha holy shit- letsgetmeta... Not to take away from the physical and mental abuse of the State literally owning you (IMO) ; but it is interesting how the politics and the psychology (macro/micro) of " personal growth " for most any significant positions of power within this contradictory socio-economic paradigm seem to be based on (mostly unspoken) principals of sociopathy , manipulation, coercion, violence and blackmail ect.
Why cant we each work within our communities and espouse things like mutal benefit, cooperation, collaboration and non-violence ; working together to enable eachother with Open Source, emulation encouragement with this awesome web2.0 style AMA-TIL-FAQ-troubleshooting culture. We all have unique interests and skills; we each have unlimited potential to build a better civilization. Okay, jusy saying OS CIV BLD COOPS should be a thing- we gotta just start operating reality with a different programing language, if that metaphore makes sense...
I just think geographic limitations are stupid; lets collaborate and crowd-source fund our way with alt currencies, OS collaboration, and chartered mutual benefit projects ! (bygod!!) Haha damn what a rant this turned out to be -- INDIVIDUATED UNITY should be our mantra.
Edit: wording and clarity
2 dejenerate 2015-02-10
That's kinda not the same thing as a secret service investigation, though, is it? Sounds like one of those lessons learned...don't abuse other humans and don't videotape other humans abusing other humans...and if you somehow don't listen to those two little pieces of advice, don't for the love of $deity transmit those videos you took of other humans abusing other humans around the base...
3 DarthStem 2015-02-10
No. Just don't talk to anybody associated with law enforcement without a lawyer. Learned my lesson. Trusted my command but they just ended up fucking me.
1 dejenerate 2015-02-10
Yeah. There's very little way it can end well when someone has it out and you're prone. Lawyers are awful but having a few in the stable is always a good defense. :/
48 Mongo1021 2015-02-10
Bring a lawyer with you.
60 Flytape 2015-02-10
Or just say "no thanks".
They don't bother to ask if they have anything on you.
Don't talk to authorities without a lawyer.
18 Mongo1021 2015-02-10
True. Your lawyer will probably try to find out in advance what the secret service wants. Based on their response, your lawyer will advise you whether or not you should go to the meeting.
Regardless. Keep us posted. Please.
43 zenicaone 2015-02-10
this , and do not even think twice about this being expensive
If you can not afford one - ask for one pro-bono - any representation is better than no representation
And do not open your mouth unless your lawyer tells you
Also see this "Dont Talk to Police"
to understand how important it is to keep your mouth shut if you have option to keep your mouth shut
21 Amos_Quito 2015-02-10
^ THIS X 10,000!!! WATCH THAT VIDEO ^
Sorry about the emphasis, but seriously... there is a reason that they say "anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."
Whatever is going on, they're NOT looking out for YOUR interests.
0 generic_username420 2015-02-10
They say that because the US is a free country where you are innocent until proven guilty, so it is literally for the exact opposite reason everyone in this retarded sub thinks.

I hope she's a GOOD friend of the family... if she is, she'll probably advise you to do exactly what everyone here has been saying - invoke your rights under the 5th Amendment and STFU...
Also, cops lie. Routinely. They will tell you that "so and so said this or accused you of that" to try to turn friends against one another.
Don't fall for it.
16 militantomg 2015-02-10
Cops are literally permitted to lie in order to get you to admit to anything. So they will always try and leverage anything and everything they can until they have nothing left, so say nothing.
1 hippylarvae 2015-02-10
Not just permitted to, they are trained to. They will be the friendliest cop you've ever met too. Sympathetic, helpful sounding; they actually make you want to help them, and they are trained to elicit this response in people in order to absolutely stab you in the back later. They're fucking you with each breath they take and you don't realize it until far later.
15 goodboy 2015-02-10
Just remember that the most common crime that people are prosecuted for in federal court is Lying to a federal agent. Usually, it is something very trivial, but they can prove that you were recorded saying x, y, or z to agent M. The prosecutor then says "Ladies and Gentleman of the jury, here we have documents showing that /u/dovakin422 clearly knew it was actually x, y, and zede. He lied to a federal agent, minimum 18 months in prison. Case closed.
Also, remember there are 5 types of spies: (1) Local spies; (2) inward spies; (3) converted spies; (4) doomed spies; (5) surviving spies.
Never let them manipulate you into becoming a doomed spy. Negotiate up your position if they make you an offer. Honestly, inward spy is the job you want to be put into. Never let them talk you into being a local spy without a high degree of compensation. Seriously, make yourself a political prostitute. You'll have a better life.
3 mtbinsane 2015-02-10
can you explain what the different spies are?
4 goodboy 2015-02-10
Local Spies are the local
dopesassets for an operation. They perform essential duties to make an op work and act as cannon fodder when the shit gets real.Inward Spies are the middle managers of the enemy's organizational structure who have been turned to work for your operational objectives.
Converted Spies are the double agents who've been caught, turned, and returned to work on your behalf and against their original masters.
Doomed or "Dead" Spies are those that are either intentionally or unintentionally exposed as spies to the enemy. They are often used to give credibility to disinformation and psychological warfare campaigns. Also, they are often used to increase the prestige and credibility of other spies that can use exposing a doomed spy to elevate his or her position within the enemy's ranks.
A Surviving Spy is any spy that succeeds in his or her mission while also living to fight another day (not a common expectation for spies as it turns out).
12 AssuredlyAThrowAway 2015-02-10
Make sure that the lawyer who accompanies you to the meeting brings a tape recorder. The user who points out the way in which the feds use the statute which prohibits lying to an agent of the federal government is absolutely correct, and there is a very high probability that anything you say to the agents will be used as grounds to charge you with an offense.
3 NWOWillBurn 2015-02-10
To add on to this, if OP does this he needs to make sure that taping the conversation without the knowledge of the SS isn't a crime by itself. Two party consent laws, and all that.
2 iamagod_____ 2015-02-10
Video and audio record that shit. Be forward about one form of recording.
Don't seek permission. Make it known, then move on. He surely will be recording as well.
NOTE(!) I am not a law practitioner. Take your full advice on this from your actual representative. Good luck.
0 iamagod_____ 2015-02-10
P.S. don't get suicided. Good luck, friend. We're thinking about you.
12 heterosapian 2015-02-10
It's highly likely you know someone who is applying for a position and they are looking for a character reference which the Secret Service, among other agencies, do extensively (and yes that includes acquaintances like neighbors). Most of the people here are paranoid morons... If you were in trouble they wouldn't take the situation so casually. Unless you're Muslim or tweeting threats against the president, nobody gives a fuck about your belief that 9/11 was an inside job.
0 hippylarvae 2015-02-10
Did you actually read OP's other posts in this thread, you moron?
2 heterosapian 2015-02-10
Nope it's not my obligation to search through every chain to see if he commented and I suspect it wouldn't my mind that he's not in trouble even if I did. He should have put more information or linked to his comments with an edit in the post itself if he wanted to give more details rather than assume we all have the time to go on a manhunt for them. Since you apparently did read them, why don't you be of some use and say why you think otherwise? I can pretty much assure you based on personal experience that they don't suddenly think the poster is some enemy of the state because he's an anarcho-capitalist or believes in privacy rights. You're allowed to hold a multitude of "extremist" beliefs in the US and based on how the Secret Service is handling the situation it's almost certain that they want to talk to him about someone else.
6 septicman 2015-02-10

0 iamhenrybond 2015-02-10
Does the secret service work to prevent illegal torrenting of copyrighted material? I could imagine if you are torrenting presidential secrets, but if it's just the latest episode of Better Call Saul, why would the Secret service get involved?
1 dovakin422 2015-02-10
I didn't think so but two of the lawyers I have spoken to think this is a possibility.
1 GovernmentOfficial 2015-02-10
You do realize that you've basically admitted to a crime on this thread...you talk too much. Watch this and STFU! Don't be afraid to take notes. NOTHING YOU SAY WILL HELP YOU IT WILL ONLY BE USED AGAINST YOU! STFU!
1 dovakin422 2015-02-10
Um, none of those are crimes.
1 GovernmentOfficial 2015-02-10
You've talked to a lawyer and they've stated that it may have something to do with illegal torrenting. This implies that in your private conversations you've admitted to engaging in illegal torrenting thus the lawyer believes it could have something to do with this not because the lawyer is just making up things but because the client had admitted to them they were engaged in the act and the lawyer has verified that this is a possible reason for the contact.
1 dovakin422 2015-02-10
Simply stated that that is one of the things they investigate. I did not imply that I had done anything of the sort
1 GovernmentOfficial 2015-02-10
Don't need to win me over, tell it to the judge. Also you must not have watched that linked video. It's very important.
0 pickengrin 2015-02-10
SS you say?
0 Bacore 2015-02-10
Why would the Secret Service be involved in discussing illegal torrenting? That's FBI jurisdiction. SS is more concerned with presidential safety, etc.
20 33degree 2015-02-10
Don't talk mother fucker! Do not talk. Get a lawyer and if they need to ask you anything, the lawyer MUST be sitting right there. Get off social media for a while. I would stop putting your thoughts online dude. They will all be used against you.
18 goodboy 2015-02-10
The secret service are awesome. You should be fine. Seriously, they're patriots and professionals. All the ones I've worked with have been great.
If you have any problems here's a tip: tell them you have reason to believe that a prostitute drugged you with scopolamine like their own agents in Columbia. It is always best to build rapport based on shared experiences with your interviewers.

76 3domfighter 2015-02-10

Lawyer up, and give them your lawyer's number. Implement your 5th amendment right. Don't say a damn word without your attorney.
14 Enochx 2015-02-10
Refuse to speak with them at all, even if they claim to have probable cause to question you.
If you honestly feel that you might be taken into custody for questioning then consult an attorney. Start learning your rights from here...
-9 PlaneswalkerSteve 2015-02-10
lol... rights. That's cute.
13 Enochx 2015-02-10
During an "Investigation", the officer/agent will intentionally word questions in a way to get you to give up your rights, correct?
"You don't have anything illegal on your person or car right? Would you mind if I searched you car?"
The above is 2 questions in 1 .. and if you answer "NO" then the officer can assume you answered both questions.
If you know your rights then you can stop the officer in his tracks, or at the very least force him to follow the laws to get probable cause to legally search.
So ya ... If by "cute" you actually mean being informed of your rights and exercising them. It's cute.
0 PlaneswalkerSteve 2015-02-10
You are assuming too much if you think I don't know my legal rights. I still think it's cute that you believe we actually have those rights, though. Have you ever been arrested? As soon as a cop decides he or she wants to, your rights will be disregarded without much effort.
1 Enochx 2015-02-10
Please educate me on exactly how a Cop/L.E.O. can legally take away your "right to remain silent".
1 PlaneswalkerSteve 2015-02-10
I never said anything about cops following laws. They don't do that. I said that your legal rights won't protect you from police in America.

8 Flatwoods 2015-02-10
Look you're obviously in a pretty serious situation and I really can understand wanting to cooperate out of fear...just don't incriminate yourself or your loved ones.
If they want to fuck you with their book they're going to no matter what. There's no reason to help lube it up and spread eagle.
7 abngeek 2015-02-10
They're very, very convincing at playing benign. I've been on the receiving end of this, trust me you have NO idea you're being fucked until they're done fucking you.
Under no circumstances would I speak to them voluntarily or without legal representation if I were you. No fucking way.
Edit: Oh and should you be detained, remember that our lovely Supreme Court recently ruled that you must positively assert your 5th amendment rights or they can continue questioning you. It's not enough to simply say "no" when they ask you if you will talk to them. You have to actively invoke your Miranda rights: "I wish to exercise my right to remain silent and to have a lawyer present during any proceeding or questioning."
3 NWOWillBurn 2015-02-10
Whatever you do OP, do not volunteer any information at all.

11 joe-6pak 2015-02-10
There is zero potential benefit in talking to them.
If you do talk to them, be sure to record the interview.
If you don't record it, the only record of the event will be written by them and will say whatever they want it to say, irrespective of what actually happened.
8 hack_jealousy 2015-02-10
Don't talk to them without a lawyer.
11 EZ_Smith 2015-02-10
As person I'd say don't meet them.
As a Redditor, I say meet them up and report back here.
As a man-child, I say tell them to meet you at various locations and watch them wander around, trying to find you ...the hunted becomes the HUNTER
1 springinslicht 2015-02-10
Then point them with a red laser from a rooftop and watch the surrounding blocks go into lockdown and SWAT teams swarming the buildings.
Actually that might not be such a good idea.
9 JUSTIN_HERGINA 2015-02-10
Is it confirmed that they were really SS? A phone call seems a bit amateurish. On the other hand, if it is SS, then they are probably monitoring you now to see what reaction they got from you by making that phone call to you. theres a few different scenarios that i get from this.
6 sheasie 2015-02-10
Agreed. The SS doesn't "call". They knock on your door.
4 madagent 2015-02-10
OP obsessed that people are after him and someone that knows him is trolling.
1 BloodWillow 2015-02-10
I also agree. If an alphabet agency wants to talk to you (especially the SS) they come to you. If they were really interested in the OP or one of his associates, they wouldn't alert him with a phone call. He'd get a knock on the door.
I'm calling BS.
1 dovakin422 2015-02-10
I don't know man. Maybe it isn't quite as serious as I'm imagining it to be? When I do meet with them with my lawyer, I will post proof here because I promise this is not bullshit.
1 BloodWillow 2015-02-10
Ok. I believe, you believe this is legit. The good thing here is that if it really was a SS agent that called you and asked you to come to them, they do not consider you a threat.
I would just chill, call them in the morning, and if it turns out to be real meet in a neutral environment. Like a coffee shop.
Edit: Never willingly walk into the vipers' den, and yes do bring a witness. Remember to arrive early.
0 dovakin422 2015-02-10
They had offered to come to my home but also offered to meet at their office instead, so I chose the latter. My initial reaction was similar to your sentiment. How do I know this guy is really who he says he is? The address and phone number he gave me check out as legitimate SS contacts. It sucks that people think I'm BSing because I really wish I was.
1 JUSTIN_HERGINA 2015-02-10
i didnt mean to offend you, and i dont think you are BSing at all. all i was saying is that it has the potential to go awry, or worse, if it was someone impersonating SS in order to get to you.
if it really is them, then they probably want to talk to you about accidentally/unintentionally using a counterfeit note at a shop somewhere. it is weird that they did ring you.
Question: the number that they called you on, was it a blocked or private number?
It could be a prank by someone that knows you, and all they had to do was google where the nearest SS office was and put their number on private when they called you.
0 dovakin422 2015-02-10
It was not blocked or private. It came up with an actual phone number with a local area code.
1 JUSTIN_HERGINA 2015-02-10
ok well, the next step is to ring the SS and ask them if it is one of their numbers.
7 KnightBeforeTomorrow 2015-02-10
By all means keep us updated and if you are not personally able to do that get a friend to report to us here as to your condition and whereabouts.
I looked through your comment history and see nothing that would interest them. Is it possibly a really shitty prank?
Some people pick up a gun and go kill brown people overseas and think of themselves as fighting for freedom. They are mistaken,
They are only fighting for corporate greed.
We here are the actual fighters for freedom, taking the ultimate chance the same as they are and we threaten no one in doing so.
All the best to you but keep in mind to keep us informed. That could be your best defense in a pinch
7 Jason_Batman 2015-02-10
My guess it might be something like this.
http://youtu.be/Xjz-FzCVhXE?t=29s
They just want to scare you. Most likely you have not broken any laws at this point. But who knows what laws will be passed in the coming months. The feds are just getting accustomed to handling these cases, and eventually they can arrest people for "hate speech", "unlawful content" on the internet, etc.
Good luck. If you are unsure whether you have broken a law, lawyer up
5 CAulds 2015-02-10
Yes, I spoke to two FBI agents from the Atlanta Georgia area in 2003 after the Atlanta Journal-Constitution (a newspaper which had a total circulation of over 1/2 million) published a short letter I wrote questioning the wisdom of attacking a tiny country without cause.
One of them agent told me, "in war, we all have to be prepared to sacrifice some freedom for the security of our country."
That hit me like a ton of bricks; for two reasons: 1) I was under the lifelong impression that freedom was worth dying for and that was why soldiers died in wars, to defend that freedom and 2) I realized that if someone did follow through with those threats; say someone shot my cattle, burned my barn, or worse, much worse, I could not expect even the FBI to take my side, let alone the local constabulary or my neighbors.
That scared me badly. It was intended to.
I was alone. And that, more than anything, changed the direction of my life in the Spring 2003. I acted alone. And two years later, in October 2005, without even giving notice to my employer, I moved my family and farm here to Canada.
No regrets.

So what you're saying is, people still don't use VPN's?
1 peacegnome 2015-02-10
it only takes once, or logging in from your phone, or something like that to give reddit a real ip. and reddit logs and keeps all of that.
5 no1113 2015-02-10
Have you ever gotten a call from them before? Did this just come out of nowhere? I mean what happened? Did you just get a call out of nowhere w/someone that said "Uh yeah. Hello. This is blah blah blah from the secret service. We would like you to come down so we can talk to you about..."?
I mean...that's not something that happens to just anybody for no reason and out of the blue.
Do you know why you were called and are being summoned? Did they mention it?
What's going on exactly here?
6 dovakin422 2015-02-10
I was literally sitting on the toilet and saw a phone call coming in on my cell from an area code from the adjacent county. I figured it may be someone from my school or someone I know so I answered. He literally just said "hello this is agent bla bla from the Secret Service" and went on about setting up a time to talk. This is COMPLETELY out of the blue. I have absolutely no idea what this could be about and I have NEVER been contacted by law enforcement in this manner before.
edit: To add, he would not tell me what it was regarding over the phone. He insisted that it had to be in person. He said it was his "hunch" that it was probably nothing, and that at this point it is not a criminal investigation but he needs to "wrap some things up". He claims it will only take about 20 minutes and he promises I will be walking out of there.
13 Feelthenips 2015-02-10
20 minutes to life bro....20 minutes to life
8 hack_jealousy 2015-02-10
His promises mean nothing. This is, at best, a fishing expedition.
Do not go without a lawyer. Even better, just blow him off. Nothing compels you to show up.
1 no1113 2015-02-10
And you just said "okay"? I mean...you didn't ASK him: "Why? What's this about? What have I done to warrant this? What is the reason why I am being summoned?"
You just said "Okay."?
What?
When are you supposed to meet with them?
11 dovakin422 2015-02-10
Dude, I asked a lot of questions. I asked if it was regarding me, what it is about, is it a criminal investigation, do I need an attorney, you name it. I wasn't just like "ok yeah sure". All he would say is that he has "been doing this for 18 and I don't think it's anything". I told him that I was a student and a veteran and he said he didn't know that (how he didn't if I'm under investigation is beyond be) and that it only furthered his hunch that it was nothing. I am as confused and perplexed as you, man.
5 no1113 2015-02-10
So basically, he called, said "We want to talk to you" and you didn't get anything out of him as to WHY? All you got was "I don't think it's anything"?
Wow.
I just wonder if this is as absolutely random as it totally seems by what you've mentioned here. I mean...on one level, it totally sounds like a random thing IF YOU DIDN'T DO ANYTHING...but, considering I think most people feel that the secret service doesn't just go randomly contacting people for questioning, it does seem that they have some sort of "extra" reason to be contacting you in particular.
I guess I'm just trying to assess what that reason might be.
EDIT: Anyone in your family/parents, siblings, etc that you think they might be going after? Any friends you think they might be going after and want to question you about?
6 dovakin422 2015-02-10
I wish it wasn't as random as it seems so I had some idea what was going on, but truthfully it really is that fucking random.
Edit: I am a programmer at a financial analysis company for banks. Maybe something to do with that?
5 Amos_Quito 2015-02-10
United States Secret Service
Seems unlikely that they would be interested in talking with regarding their Protection Services, so it could well be work related.
4 no1113 2015-02-10
Ahhh. Okay, well damn. That might have something to do with it then.
3 NWOWillBurn 2015-02-10
This doesn't relate to your call from the SS, but...
Seriously, run like hell from that industry.
Bank executives see a financial programmer as little more than a glorified fall guy for when SHTF.
3 Brownsy67 2015-02-10
And here is why they want to talk to you.
3 Weird_Map_Guy 2015-02-10
Actually, the secret service's main role is investigating financial crimes. I still would be very cautious though.
2 hellostarsailor 2015-02-10
Do you have any friends or family trying to get security clearance? Could be an interview on that person's qualifications...
2 Lu_the_Mad 2015-02-10
FBI does clearance investigations, or a contracted company does.
1 CassiusMethyl999 2015-02-10
oh shit. dude .. don't you know about all the bankers that are dying?
1 Sek101 2015-02-10
I doubt anyone would be able to discern details when on the receiving end of these... inquiries.
1 no1113 2015-02-10
Depends on what the inquiries and the responses to the inquiries are.
4 OakTable 2015-02-10
Maybe it's a scammer claiming to be SS to lure you somewhere, trick you into telling them things about yourself, or is practicing to see what they can get people to do before trying a real scam?
2 dovakin422 2015-02-10
That was my lawyer's first reaction but when all the contact info checked out we had to take it seriously.
1 OakTable 2015-02-10
They could have given you the secret service's actual contact information so you'd think the call was real, for one reason or another. (Note: they did ask to meet you at your home first before you refused.)
Not really sure how scammers would think that would help over giving a fake address, because if you went in the SS might wonder who was trying to impersonate them and might investigate. Then again, if you were given a fake address you could be more likely to bring it to their attention. And maybe they'd think that the SS would just think that someone working there called the wrong person and it would look like a mistake rather than someone trying to pull something? Yeah... it would be pretty ballsy to impersonate the SS in the first place, so that wouldn't seem too much of a stretch to try to make it look like an agent accidentally called the wrong person.
Well, even if it is really the SS, the situation is still something to be leery of. :P
Did your lawyer call the secret service's office to confirm with them if and who in the SS called you and all that?
1 Ifco 2015-02-10
Sounds like you were basically a name and a phone number if he doesn't know your background. Doesn't sound like a big deal, still would not go though.
1 idiom_bLue 2015-02-10
A previous boyfriend of mine was called by a detective and he basically said the save thing. Had he went, he would have been arrested on the spot for a crime that he didn't commit. The charges were eventually dropped, but the warrant was already in effect at the time he was requested to talk.
0 know_comment 2015-02-10
so they lied to you about being from the secret service? That sounds really shady...
2 dovakin422 2015-02-10
What do you mean? He gave me his name, the office number, and office address (all have which have checked out with the research that my lawyer and myself have done). These people are definitely legitimate.
1 know_comment 2015-02-10
oh, i misinterpreted what you were saying about your DA friend.
I'm back to my original theory that they are investigating someone you know for a threat that was made.
1 dovakin422 2015-02-10
I honestly hope that this is the case. It may disappointing to everyone on here if it winds up being something as simple as that but it won't be disappointing to me!
5 hippylarvae 2015-02-10
NEVER - TALK - TO LAW ENFORCEMENT.
This isn't some hipster fad spawned by the internet on accident by punks that want to sound edgy. It is the most useful survival tool a citizen can deploy against police or other law enforcement agents these days: SILENCE. If they want a happy, chipper meeting with you, that's nice. They can get a warrant for that. You have rights. Use them. Do not even talk about the weather or the fucking superbowl with them. Doesn't matter Secret Service, local PD, FBI, whatever.
NEVER - TALK - TO LAW ENFORCEMENT.
4 DronePuppet 2015-02-10
Maybe it was /u/George_Tenet posing as the SS looking for a pal.
2 sheasie 2015-02-10
BUUUUUUUUUUUUURN!!!
4 auriem 2015-02-10
Just say no. There is absolutely no way talking to them does you any good.
4 OswaldWasAFag 2015-02-10
All of the suppositions here fall under more of an FBI AoR. USSS get involved in two kinds of cases and two only: counterfeit money operations, and threats to the president and his family.
I think there might be three options. Someone thinks OP is involved somehow in funny money, Someone thinks OP has expressed thoughts of violence towards their human charges (they have a LOT of leeway here), or that was not a secret service official you spoke to (perhaps another agency or 'other' identity intent on cashing in on a patsy for political coin.
Federal agencies operate out of the same buildings, and often share the same building infrastructure- depending on the size of the region in question. That often includes sharing first floor meeting rooms, so that one never really knows who they are dealing with at the department level.
4 getityetquestionmark 2015-02-10
Based on your post mentioning your relatives... Have you considered the idea someone you know is trying to join the secret service? They could very well be hoping to inquire about them? I can't imagine they'd call you in for an investigation. They love showing off their modded cars. Pulling up on a suspect is their favorite part of the job.
Only experience I had with service was a customer using fake 20's and they weren't waiting in an office. Surprisingly enough, the suspect was the brother of a fed.
1 and_the_wully_wully 2015-02-10
That's my guess, it could be about fake money.

Have them do an ask you anything on reedit.
2 know_comment 2015-02-10
They probably want to interview you about someone in your circle making what could be construed as a threat against the president.
I'm no lawyer, and the general rule of "anything you say canand will be used against you" is probably sound, but as far as I understand, the Secret Service is not in the habit of charging people who aren't guilty. I would personally feel comfortable interviewing with the Secret Service.
If you do feel that something YOU'VE said could be construed as a threat or if their line of questioning seems to be headed towards accusatory- you need to lawyer up.
Do they also investigate identity theft and credit card fraud?
2 redditeditard 2015-02-10
Lawyer the fuck up.
2 Talorca 2015-02-10
Which nations secret service?
(Doesn't the US Secret Service officially apply to just the President's security?)
Edit:
If you are an American then I would assume it is something financial. You one of them whackadoo Rand Paul supporters son? Know any? Any that might have ... pissed you off in the past you might wanna tell them about?
1 royalscenery 2015-02-10
He said he's an anacho-capitalist, very similar
-1 AlphamaxHD 2015-02-10
Most likely, he unknowingly deposited a counterfeit at his bank or maybe local grocery store. Something to do with fake notes, I'm sure.
1 Talorca 2015-02-10
Or that someone he might have been associated with by a clueless third party did something stupid that the Secret Service don't actually think has anything to do with him and they are just politely asking him to go through some formalities to clear it all up.
2 AlphamaxHD 2015-02-10
Maybe they want to warm him that the president is planning to assassinate him.
Edit: If I wasn't on a government watch list, I certainly am now. It was nice knowin ya.
2 Ambiguously_Ironic 2015-02-10

4 dovakin422 2015-02-10
I checked out the address and suite number and it checks out. I will provide proof if and when I go to the office if you'd like.
2 BloodWillow 2015-02-10
I don't think he was suggesting that it was not a real address. It might be, but how can you be sure the person on the phone was really SS.
1 dovakin422 2015-02-10
Well, I suppose I will find out when I call the office tomorrow?

3 twon92 2015-02-10
Can confirm op's post. Reason : he's my brother and the asst DA is my girlfriend's mother.
1 BloodWillow 2015-02-10
You say you can confirm OP's story because...
This reason I get.
Good for your girlfriend's mother... I guess? What does your girlfriend's mother have to do with this? Also, can you confirm that the person who called was actually a government agent?
1 twon92 2015-02-10
If you look through the posts, op said he was getting legal advice/ assistance through a family friend that it's an assistant DA for a federal court near the ss office he is being asked to go to. On that note, no I can not at this time say without a doubt that the man who called him was ss but it does appear to be true as of yet and will likely soon be confirmed.
1 BloodWillow 2015-02-10
Dude... Really? Where does Kevin Bacon fit in? OMG someone who knows someone, is working next to some building some random person said to go to.

If you're ex-military it might very well be part of a routine background check on someone you served with. At my office we get requests to meet with agents from various agencies all the time. Frequently it's "we heard so and so likes to drink pretty heavily".
That or John Malkovich is setting up as the fall guy.

1 madagent 2015-02-10
which office?

1 xlets 2015-02-10
It's most likely something to do with a fraud investigation. I tried to buy some brewing equipment off eBay ~8 months ago and it turned out to be part of an extensive fraud/theft ring. Talked to the SS, they told me what happened and that I probably wouldn't get my money back.
1 jafbm 2015-02-10

Sounds like you deposited a counterfeit into the bank, or something similar.
1 TIPTOEINGINMYJORDANS 2015-02-10
Everyone here is mad paranoid but I'm pretty sure it's something harmless. What I think it is is that you used counterfeit cash and they want to ask you how you acquired said money.
Do you do drugs? Sell even? You don't have to answer just ask yourself. My friend was a drug dealer and the secret service left a note saying they want a meeting. He bugged out but it was only that he had used counterfeit cash by chance and they wanted to know how he got it. He told them from selling drugs and they were on their way continuing to trace it.
It sounds odd that the secret service contacted you but they actually handle counterfeiting. They're under the department of homeland security and treasury.
So yeah you probably accidentally used counterfeit cash and they are tracing it. They give zero fucks if you sell drugs or whatever as long as you aren't involved in the counterfeiting.
1 4to6 2015-02-10
Fuck 'em. Let them arrest you, if they've got anything to arrest you on ... but it's obvious they don't or they would already have done it. You don't owe them two minutes of your time.

If they called you to come to their office for a talk, that's probably all it is. If they thought you were a legit threat, you'd have been dragged out of your house by a SWAT team by now. No, what likely happened is you made some comment on the interwebz that somehow drew their attention, and now they are going to attempt to intimidate you into being a little less outspoken in your online activism.
I look forward to your post-interview report.

I will not be meeting with them at their office. My attorney is attempting to find out more info. The only way I would meet them would be at my attorney's office.

Never, ever, fucking ever talk to the cops.
Why is that so hard for people to understand.

Look you're obviously in a pretty serious situation and I really can understand wanting to cooperate out of fear...just don't incriminate yourself or your loved ones.
If they want to fuck you with their book they're going to no matter what. There's no reason to help lube it up and spread eagle.

Whatever you do OP, do not volunteer any information at all.

Fuck that noise, get a lawyer

Hmm, depending on the level of fascism of their nation phase 2 could be being bundled into a van as a confirmed 'problem'...

Lawyer up, and give them your lawyer's number. Implement your 5th amendment right. Don't say a damn word without your attorney.
18 Fuckyousantorum 2015-02-10
Seems like he has no proof but wants to trick you into giving him some so he can arrest you. Lawyer up.
14 Enochx 2015-02-10
Refuse to speak with them at all, even if they claim to have probable cause to question you.
If you honestly feel that you might be taken into custody for questioning then consult an attorney. Start learning your rights from here...

Jackpot!

Are you in DC?

Completely agree

He is not your friend, he does not want to help you. Please know this, and understand it.
Say nothing more to him of your own volition.

To add on to this, if OP does this he needs to make sure that taping the conversation without the knowledge of the SS isn't a crime by itself. Two party consent laws, and all that.

Anything you say can, and will, be used against you in a court of law. Nothing you say can, or will, be used for you in a court of law.

Hope you're enjoying your stay and our hospitality. Good move!
