Mods at /r/skincareaddiction caught in proven collusion with companies, accepting payment for promoting submissions and products.

I haven't seen this anywhere else on reddit, but 3 mods from /r/skincareaddiction were recently banned because they were charging upwards of $1,100 per month to promote products, routines and companies.

You can read about it on the front page of that subreddit, it's all anyone is talking about right now.

There is also hard evidence in the form of basically a press sheet for the service http://i.imgur.com/l8YTxVh.png

It's not often we get a proven case like this, and also it's interesting that SCA is a relatively small and niche community.

This instance makes it easy to see how a few rogue mods can easily take matters into their own hands and profit from status and discredit the reputation of a subreddit.

That being said, I'm not trying use this as proof of anything else or any other moderator problems. It just feels indicative of a lot of discussion that's been going on here recently.

Whenever you are looking at media

and you cannot identify the product being sold

you are that product.

That is more a quote about data collection in a modern era and selling said PII, but I guess it could stretch to here.

What is the business model here?

It isn't advertising.

? How is it not advertising if they are accepting payment for promotion for selling a product..?

What isn't advertising?

Edgy to the xtreme.

McReddit is rotten to the core...

I love this term for what reddit has become. Is it yours? May I use it?

For a small subscription cost

Its free to use :)

But it wasn't mine - I remember seeing it and expressing the same.

Its great.

Hey guys, do this: PM a mod and offer money to promote something... anything. Watch how fast they reply.

I don't have money but I can offer them this

You have yourself a deal.

I figured that's what happened. It's been pretty well known for a while that the mods over there were involved in affiliate marketing.

All those trillionaires out there

looks like that mod got wild and made the money on the side instead of how getting through reddit admins.

now is out and maybe it will start talking

it is also important to note that at least one mod was banned for involvement in the scam, when she was not actually involved. she may have been an unliked mod for other, sufficient reasons, but it's important to not throw out the half-burned rubber ducky with the bathwater. they go into different trashcans. that user's account has been unbanned, but she is no longer a mod.

thanks bot! edited.

This is the kind of conspiracy that I like. Not any of that "hurr durr the Holocaust never happened" bullshit.

hurr durr the Holocaust never happened

Totally unnecessary propaganda catapult detected.

Gosh darnit. My zionist catapult would have worked if it weren't for you meddling kids!

This conversation had nothing to do with the Holocaust. And you felt you needed to change that.

Yes.

Makes you wonder what else is going on out there. One reason my ban hammer is so light on /r/ProjectAra is to avoid showing favorites like we see here. Want to talk about another modular device that doesn't run Android or ARA modules? No problem, as long as it's a modular device.

I'm not saying it's wrong and I enjoy the sub, but I think I remember reading that the mods of r/circlejerk have an affiliate youtube site they make money off of. I guess what I'm trying to say is there's a line and SCA mods crossed it.

Yes if you're trying to underhandedly steer people towards paying for a product or service for personal profit. No if you're openly collecting money from ad revenue on Youtube.

I think the point is that it is highly unlikely that it is just skin care and circle jerking that are being exploited. I'm sure similar schemes are going on on the larger, more visible forums.

I totally agree with you. /r/HailCorporate really tries to toe the line, even if I think they might get carried away, sometimes.

But really, the worst that can happen is that this safe-haven turns into facebook. Then we just migrate to reddit's next incarnation.

Edit: I thought about it some more. The worst that can happen is that reddit turns into facebook without anyone realizing it. Then we're all fucked.

It kind of feels like we are headed that way. The idea of taking money to stifle topics and promote others is also part of this. If skincare mods can be swayed, what's to say r/worldnews can't? I mean, it makes sense with how quick they are to delete certain topics. It's not the end of the world but it is shady and frustrating. Some people come here to get news that isn't cherry picked by the same media outlets, it would be a shame if that is still going on by the same players behind the scenes.

I would be surprised if that wasn't going on, at least to some extent, already. We know the way media works, regardless of it's sovereign political power. It's only a matter of time before any entity becomes controlled by it's influence.

Google help us.

What's the next reddit?

If it already exists I'm unaware of it. It reminds me of the Myspace days when Facebook came around, or even the Digg story. When it happens it will be a natural transition.

My god something that is an actual conspiracy! Nice, makes a change from all the jew bashing that goes on here.

Oh fuck off with the sense of superiority. Go and live in your fantasy world.

I disagree as it would set a dangerous precedence for advertisers swamping every conceivable sub and make them unreadable.

pretty sure that violates reddit's TOS. bigtime.
