Different content for different users?

35  2016-04-14 by Just_Succubus_Things

This morning I was browsing this sub and came across the post about the Conspiracy of Silence documentary doing really well in r/documentaries. I went to go check it out, impressed it had managed to make it so high there. I saw it had probably 3k upvotes and was the top post. I came back here to comment in the thread about it, then went back to the post in /r/documentaries to read the comments there and it was gone. Completely missing from the list there. So I came back to the thread here and posted that it was gone to be told it was still there. I screenshotted the fact it was missing for me and we compared. I then checked on my main account. Guess what? I could see it on that one. It wasn't just that link that was missing from my feed in the documentaries in either, there was another. It was also able to be viewed on my main account.

Just something to be aware of. Content is being filtered for us apparently. I saw stuff disappear. Other people saw things that were missing for me. I wonder how often this is happening.

http://imgur.com/xMszgvK as you can see it was completely missing from my feed. I usually use Alien Blue. You can't see as many in the list but here's a comparison of both my accounts in that awhile ago. The one video that has replaced the missing one only has 10 upvotes? As opposed to 3k on the missing Conspiracy of Silence one. It's all very strange.

Just took brand new screenshots of the same thing so you can see times stamps on each account so you don't think I'm messing with stuff.

Ugh. That is not what I took that to mean. I doubt others did either. In plain sight though I guess... thanks for sharing that.

How the internet is "tailored" to you. Not that shocking. Tis' a brave new world...

Right. I wouldn't say I find it shocking. I'm just not sure most are aware it's happening. And it definitely makes for awkward conversation when you are insisting something isn't there and someone else says it is. I think most are/were likely under the assumption that they would be seeing the same content as others in individual subreddits. Obviously the users are having less and less control over everything every day. This is just another example.

I'm just not sure most are aware it's happening.

We here are... The masses? Not so much. Best post this outside of this sub. We aren't allowed to gain too much attention for the masses to see, here. /r/conspiracy is blacklisted, basically. Good find, good proof, now go spread the word!

'Tis not tis'

Reddit simply doesn't do that though. You set your own preferences here. Proof to the contrary would be interesting but I've not seen it.

edit: TIL that apparently they began experimenting with doing this recently...

Well that's vague and dodgy. Thanks for the link.

Unrelated, my only interaction with spez:

Reddit simply doesn't do that though.

From OP, it appears they are.

You set your own preferences here.

False belief of "control/customization".

Proof to the contrary would be interesting but I've not seen it.

Umm.. OP?

From OP, it appears they are.

Speculation and confusion is not proof or even evidence.

False belief of "control/customization".

Proof? This is a pretty ridiculous claim. Anyone can play with their account settings and test them out to see if they work, which they do.

OP on both of what you are saying. I have to ask Dusty, are you an admin?

OP on both of what you are saying.

Not sure what you mean by that.

are you an admin?

No. I have thought about applying, but I do not want to live in San Fran.

I have had one account shadowbanned, /u/crackduck, because the /r/conspiratard goons successfully lied to admins and claimed that a parody screenshot from TrollHunters.org was actual personal information. Other than that I have a great rapport with the admins.

Not sure what you mean by that.

Read and see what OP is saying/providing..

No. I have thought about applying, but I do not want to live in San Fran.

Just thought I'd ask ;)

Read and see what OP is saying/providing..

I did. See my comment in response to them.

Also see my edit to the previous comment for further info.

I just did. But your defense of this shit hole, just seems off to me... This is /r/conspiracy after all ;)...

I defend anything I see being subjected to unsupported FUD, especially something I personally enjoy and appreciate. Why are you on reddit if you think it's a "shit hole"?

I defend anything I see being subjected to unsupported FUD

What is FUD about this post? You use this acronym, and trust me I've seen it both here and on the inside from you... ;)

Why are you on reddit if you think it's a "shit hole"?

Alternatives take time ;) . You act like this is the only site I'm on....

What is FUD about this post?

OMG really?

Yup. Really. Use your words Dusty..

This post is textbook FUD. Do I really need to quote the definition for you again?

Still waiting for you to explain how this post is FUD.... Educate us Dusty..

/sigh

I don't think that OP is engaging in disinformation here, but the uncertainty and doubt elements are the crux of this post. There's no proof here that suggests anything dodgy is going on. If you're truly concerned about then you should ask admins directly. Somehow I doubt that you'll do that though.

/sigh.... You have to link to wikipedia, instead of using your own words on explaining how this post is FUD.....

There's no proof here that suggests anything dodgy is going on.

Yes there is. Look at OP. Are you participating in disinformation?

If you're truly concerned about then you should ask admins directly.

Why the fuck would I want to engage with corrupt admin?

Also:

Dat warrant canary.. Dusty, you are becoming more transparent the more and more I interact with you. Your defense of this, and your mod ship here has me questioning...

OP posted some vague and unverifiable screenshots of his subjective experience using multiple accounts. The fact that you think this is some kind of proof of malfeasance on the part of reddit.com is par for the course for you, uncritically believing anything and everything that questions reddit.com or pretty much anything you dislike and think is a "shit hole".

Dat warrant canary

You dislike and defame me because I tend to poke holes in your irrational and unhealthy paranoia. It's no mystery.

Whatever you say Dusty. Also, why post about a racist Jew? I'm not seeing why you would post that in context to OP. Is that supposed to give you some online creds? You got that small of a peeny? Thanks Nancy Drew for your work?!? Congrats! You wouldn't be forum sliding/committing FUD would you?

Because you randomly brought up the warrant canary (out of context to OP). I even quoted that.

Enjoy your temp ban.

Yeah I don't know if they are doing that or not. That's what I'm asking basically. That's why I took the screenshots. No agenda, just questions. I don't take these screenshots I took as proof of anything except what I experienced today, which happened to be weird.

I understand.

Just keep in mind that posts like this tend to rile up the irrationally paranoid and hostile users that this sub does tend to attract. They literally see your desire for understand what happened as 'proof' because you actually made screenshots.

Great username by the way. ;)

Oh I get that. I expect skepticism. I'm that way myself. And I would much rather this be me doing something stupid than the other implication. I can't figure it out though. And I've had a super weird week that's making me extra paranoid too. So if someone figures it out, more power to them. Here's my settings. I blurred other name but you can see the karma difference to hopefully be able to tell they are different accounts.

And thanks, about the user name haha. :) Edit: Fixed it. Oops.

The 'link options' are different for your alt account. Perhaps you accidentally downvoted it. If not, send a message to admins and I bet they will help you understand what happened. :)

That would make a lot more sense then. Thanks for being smarter than me this day.

Thank you for being civil and polite!

Hey that's the only way to sort stuff out. I just tested downvoting a link and then refreshing (in alien blue which is what I normally use) to see if that feature even works and it doesn't look like it does anything. Links still show up even if downvoted. So I think I will just message admins to ask just in case and ask alien blue as well if they know of any glitch in that regard. Could even be a glitch between the two. I don't know. I'll update if I hear anything.

I'll update if I hear anything.

Please do.

I've been wondering about that.
Every now and then, when I hit the page back button, a page will pop up for a split second that has different content then the page I end up on.

Yep. That's exactly what happened this morning. I've noticed it before and just assumed my mind was playing tricks on me or something was totally deleted for all. Now I know that's not the case.

Have you checked your 'hidden' tab in case you might have accidentally hidden the post?

I just checked. I don't have anything hidden.

Ay can y'all hear that George Carlin video tho? I can't

Same thing happened to me and I'm a new user, I noticed it on the 2nd time I commented on a 9/11 article, now I haven't seen it since? Unless I go into my own comments it's there but not if I search for it normally... REDDIT seems like it's constantly being messed with, glitchy type of activities happen

It could be that, but it could also be a side effect of reddit cached pages and load-balancing. I've noticed these effects before after edits that 'didn't take'. It turns out they did take in another browser, but in mine they were cached and this wasn't a browser cache. It was literally giving 2 differnet pages. I've even seen it 'flip flop' between previous edits and new edits.

this made me insane at first and I though I was being QUANTUMINSERT'ed then I thought about it for a second more and knowing what I know of shittywebdevelopment, I realized they were having problems propagating new edits and new content across ALL their mirrors in their loadbalancer.

What this means is that some web servers of theirs have the old version, some have the edited, newer version and they with sporadically serve the old and new versions at differnet times. It's fucking nuts, and very bad. But that's reddit. If Aaron were still alive he'd tell them to get their act together.

At any rate, this happens with teh content queue as well. you can have things not show up quite yet, and then they do. This badcaching looks like treachery but really it's devops incompetence. Actually this problem is common with loadbalancing.

Kind of weird though that it's been doing this the whole day though I think. Like it was fine at 8:03 am then at 8:05 it was gone. Still that way at 9:00 pm. And different content showing for each of my accounts.

Possible explanations:

  • You accidentally clicked the 'hide' button with one of your accounts. (most likely what happened)

  • You accidentally downvoted it and have your preferences set to hide downvoted posts

  • You have your preferences set to hide viewed posts

Stick to one account and this Chicken Little type stuff won't happen. ;)

I did check to make sure I hadn't hidden it, that would have made the most sense. Nothing appears to be hidden. I'm not sure what sort of settings I would have different that would cause me to see different articles in the same subreddit though. Any ideas? I do like having two accounts for a variety of reasons though. The other one is mostly abandoned now. I only checked with if because I realized this missing thread stuff during a conversation with another user so I logged in the other account to see if it was affected as well.

Can you screenshot your settings pages for the two accounts?

If you really want to understand what happened you can directly ask admins:

Are we sure someone's not just hitting the "hide" button at the bottom of every post?

What is FUD about this post?

OMG really?
