My Thoughts on a Flat Earth
11 2017-05-13 by olikdw
It's utterly absurd; I mean - the Earth is obviously a globe. Think about it for a moment. How could it NOT be a sphere? Everyone who isn't insane absolutely KNOWS that it is a sphere, therefore it must be.
That was my state of mind last week. Two nights ago there was a thread on the front page that said something like: "Flat Earthers are just shills to discredit us REAL critical thinkers"
It caught my attention because it was perhaps the third post within a few weeks that was nearly identical: "This CRAZY theory is a SHILL attempt to undermine US" as if WE are some organized group.
I read the comments in the thread. They struck me as coordinated.
"Didn't everyone already KNOW that the flat earthers were shills?"
"They are the proof that the dumbing down of America has succeeded"
"They are such retards"
etc.
So I thought intensely about it for hours and realized that I had absolutely no clue whether the Earth was flat or not.
I've never been to outer space. I've never experienced the curvature of the Earth. I don't feel like I am moving at a gazillion miles an hour around a hot ball of gas.
So, in my reality, I just have no fucking clue what shape the Earth is, and if you KNOW for sure one way or the other then I would love to hear how you know.

welcome to the conversation.

Yeah man! Come to think of it, I've never been to America, how do I know it exists? Could be an elaborate ruse to discredit Canada.

lol, /r/finlandConspiracy
n/a Putin_loves_cats 2017-05-13
Numerous civilians have been the America to show you it does exist and they cross verify each other. Currently, only certain governments have been to space to give you confirmation. And we all know the government is all fart and lollipops, and that they would never lie or deceive. nooo.....
n/a KiwiBattlerNZ 2017-05-13
But they're all in on it. Just like all the people who have seen the curvature of the earth are all in on the "spherical earth" scam....

You realize you sound more ridiculous than a FEr, right?

He does but he's not smart enough to realize the differences in his comparisons.

Oh wise one... please educate me... what are the differences?

You realise that was the intent... right?
My parody of their argument is spot on.

Nah... collusion to discredit Canada is the only explanation.

I don't think I have a brain. I've never seen it before and I don't trust the scans the doctors show us. It's obviously a fake creation of zionist doctors that want to hide the true divine nature of the human being. The only thing inside my body is my soul and the Holy Spirit.
n/a Repent_Now 2017-05-13
We have evidence of brains, we've seen brains.. you can look up someone getting brain surgery and empirically conclude that you also have a brain.
You cannot empirically conclude the earth is round.
Maybe you don't have a brain.
n/a pm_me_halal_stuff 2017-05-13
How am I supposed to trust zionist doctors? ALL of them are in on the conspiracy. All those videos and images of brains are fake news!
n/a KiwiBattlerNZ 2017-05-13
Oh yes you can.
Simple geometry and observation proves the earth is spherical.
Pick a spot where you can see all the way to the horizon without obstruction. Send someone out to that horizon where they begin to disappear and measure the distance between you. Do that in multiple directions around you so that you can map your entire field of view. You will find that at some finite distance the person starts to go over a horizon. You will also find the distance to that horizon is the same in every direction.
Now build a tower where you were standing, the taller the better, and repeat the experiment of sending someone out to the horizon and measuring the distance. Then build it higher still, and measure again.
What you will find is that in every direction you look, you will be able to see further when you're higher, then when you're lower. You will be able to see a larger area of land at the top of the tower than in the middle, and a larger area of land in the middle than at the bottom.
If the earth was a flat plane, you would not be able to see further simply by moving higher. So the earth must be some other shape. The only shape that can accommodate the observations you have made is a sphere. On a sphere no matter which direction you look, the horizon will always be the same distance away at a specific height. If you go higher, the horizon will be further away, but still the same distance in every direction.
Based on the numbers you have recorded, you can calculate the curvature of the earth. This will allow you to calculate the circumference of the earth, and also to make predictions of how far away the horizon will be at a given height.
So now you build a new tower to a specific height, make the calculation, and predict how far away the horizon will be. You will be able to do this anywhere on the sphere where you have an unobstructed view of the horizon.
If you send someone out the specified distance, you will find they are on the horizon. Send them a little further and they will begin to disappear.
You can repeat this experiment over and over again, with different height towers and at different locations and still be able to predict how far away the horizon is.
That is an empirical way to prove the earth is a sphere.

Lmfao well done CIA, you've derailed conspiracy theorists so much that in 2017 we're legitimately debating whether the earth is actually flat....
n/a Kleedok 2017-05-13
I think it's the build-a-burger group behind the brain lie.
n/a ggenius1 2017-05-13
Are you comparing traveling to America, to traveling to Antarctica? Because if so, lol.
n/a polkadotgirl 2017-05-13
Right now I do not think the Earth is flat, but I am researching it like crazy. It is honestly making my head hurt because I have to quesion every single thing I was taught in school.
Whether these people are shills or whatever, I just want to know for myself.
I was also suspicious of that thread.
n/a olikdw 2017-05-13
the OP of that thread made a disgustingly bad argument. His/Her logical fallacy was: https://yourlogicalfallacyis.com/no-true-scotsman
n/a polkadotgirl 2017-05-13
Also, I saw one that says "I am a land surveyor and the world is not flat." Proceeded to provide no evidence.
Again, I do not know what the hell to believe. The last time I went on an airplane, I stared out the window the entire time. I could not figure it out. The windows are so small.
And then I spend all my spare time researching. I look at arguments from all angles.
I do know something is highly suspicious. What are they hiding?
The moon itself is an enigma!
n/a Strange_Me 2017-05-13
If you have spent this much time trying to figure it out...you are doing something terribly wrong.
n/a polkadotgirl 2017-05-13
Well it leads into a lot of questions and directions...
And I am spending a lot if time actually researching and verifying. I am not just taking anybody's word for anything.
n/a VocabKey 2017-05-13
You're doing the right thing. Some people on here would have you believe the government lies to you about everything but space.
n/a polkadotgirl 2017-05-13
Well if people start small...
The government somehow lost thousands of pictures of the moon landing?
Come on now.
n/a KiwiBattlerNZ 2017-05-13
And some people might even try to convince you that you don't need to take the government's word for it.
They might try to explain how you can determine the earth is a sphere all by yourself.
n/a dandroid1_0 2017-05-13
That land surveyor post was really weird. It seemed like someone got him to post it, but then he made a fool of himself by not backing anything up, saying 3 miles was the utmost longest distance he ever worked with, and didn't refute a single flat earth argument. I wonder who puts these people up to that kind of thing. Who pays anti-flat earth shills?
n/a escalationstares 2017-05-13
No it isn't.
n/a Hydrogenfive 2017-05-13
The moon has an independent light source that projects cold light.
n/a escalationstares 2017-05-13
No it doesn't.
Furthermore, the idea of it being an "independent light source" is easily disproven by looking at the evolution of the shadows/edges of craters over the course of lunar phases.
n/a Hydrogenfive 2017-05-13
Its colder than shade, you can test it yourself.
n/a escalationstares 2017-05-13
No it isn't. The experiments you've seen on Youtube don't account for radiative cooling. If you tested it yourself in controlled conditions you would know this.
n/a justinxduff 2017-05-13
there is no such thing as "cold light"...
n/a polkadotgirl 2017-05-13
A lot of mysteries
n/a escalationstares 2017-05-13
Such as?
n/a olikdw 2017-05-13
It's nuts how this went from rising to ZERO in a very short amount of time. The point of my post is that I don't know.
n/a polkadotgirl 2017-05-13
I just had a thought how people tie their identity to their beliefs and politics.
When I stopped doing that, I could explore things more freely.
I used to label myself as some liberal atheist. My reality was a direct reflection of that, and any contradiction to my beliefs would anger me. Even questions would anger me!
The flat earth thing does not anger me because ultimately I am not tied to the earth being round, flat, hollow, whatever. It is just a journey toward truth for me.
Letting go of our biases is so important.
n/a DumbledoreSays 2017-05-13
Most of us take a lot of things for granted on a daily basis. Even just the existence of 'Sidewinder Missiles'. Have you ever doubted this, or just taken it on face value?
n/a AlienPsychic51 2017-05-13
According to the Flat Earth theory the sun must be a focused beam like a flashlight. If it wasn't a beam it would be able to be seen at night since it can never actually be below the horizon since there is no horizon.
How is this possible?
All it takes for you to confirm that the Earth is in fact a sphere is to watch a sunrise or sunset and see what happens.
As the sun moves above or below the threshold of vision what shape is it? It's still round, right? The only part you can't see is the part that went BELOW THE HORIZON.
Can a flashlight do the same thing? If you look at the beam from the side doesn't the reflector distort the shape? A flashlight seen at an angle will be crescent shaped.
What about the sky? Is it light or dark? If it was a beam wouldn't it be dark? Sometimes you can see clouds or airplanes brightly lit when the sun is below the horizon.
n/a polkadotgirl 2017-05-13
From what I have read, Flat Earth says the sun moves...not the Earth.
n/a KiwiBattlerNZ 2017-05-13
The flat earth argument says that the sun only lights up part of the surface at a time because its light is a focused beam, like a flashlight with a reflector. This allows one part of the surface to be lit, while the other is in darkness.
The problem with that theory is that we can see the full lit face of the sun at all times. It's doesn't turn away from us at sunset, but instead drops below the horizon.
If I held a flashlight so that it was lighting you up, then turned it so that it was lighting someone else up and leaving you in darkness, you'd see the source of the light change shape.
n/a AlienPsychic51 2017-05-13
Yes, according to them the sun moves in a circle above the Earth and shines down like a flashlight. The beam is creating night and day.
You seemed to be curious. I figured I'd give you something other than their bullshit to think about.
Someone linked a video in one of the other FE discussions. The sun spins around the North pole and spins at a different distance depending on the season. It's closer to the North during Northern hemisphere summer and closer to the south in winter. They basically took the seasonal latitude information for the sun from some source and plotted it into their animation.
It kinda looks like it makes sense but if you notice that the distance around the outside of their "map" puts Australia, South Africa, and South America at a huge distorted distance.
We usually try to believe something because we assume that they're not bullshiting since we ourselves wouldn't bullshit about such a thing. Unfortunately, not everyone lives by the same standards.
n/a polkadotgirl 2017-05-13
If anything I think flat earth is there to hide something else.
Also, I cannot figure out moon phases under flat earth.
n/a AlienPsychic51 2017-05-13
There once was a time when that was how people really thought. They just didn't know any better. As time passed and our knowledge increased some people figured out that it was a sphere. I'm guessing it was probably ship captains trying to navigate that first came to the conclusion.
Being on a boat it's pretty easy to notice that the Earth isn't flat. You can look through a binocular and see that a ship at a particular distance is mostly hidden from view. The top is revealed first and the rest comes into sight as you move closer.
Seems to me that there are plenty of discrepancies that are obvious when you think about it.
n/a polkadotgirl 2017-05-13
Just for fun...
They say one proof that the world is round is that anyone can see a boat disappear over the horizon.
But when you get a zoom lens, even after the boat has "disappeared", you can still see it. Why?
n/a AlienPsychic51 2017-05-13
Got any proof?
n/a polkadotgirl 2017-05-13
There is a bunch of youtube videos
https://youtu.be/EBYg3u5c7og
n/a ZapRapTap 2017-05-13
What is the video supposed to demonstrated aside that magnification allows you to see objects that are far away?
[Can you explain how the Sun remains a constant size and speed over the course of a day when viewed through a solar filter?]((https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YhNFoy2fAr4))
n/a polkadotgirl 2017-05-13
Did you watch it? Honestly I need help.
Haha.
n/a ZapRapTap 2017-05-13
I did. It was filmed on a hot day, so of course there's going to be distortion. How does that prove anything for either models?
Can you tell me how this explanation can make the Sun behave in the video that I showed you?
n/a polkadotgirl 2017-05-13
I have to watch your video now.
n/a AlienPsychic51 2017-05-13
The arc of the Sun as it passes above us is probably about 1000 miles from sunrise to sunset. That's not allowing for whatever distance is necessary to be at a constant height along the entire path.
The Sun always appears to be the same size. You can use your thumb to cover it at arms length to see that this is true as long as you use an appropriate protective filter.
Perspective is something that we are very familiar with. An object in the distance appears to be smaller than it would be if you are very close to it.
It's impossible for something to move such a distance and not show a difference in size unless it's very very far away.
That's a pretty good debunk.
n/a KiwiBattlerNZ 2017-05-13
Sorry, but that video accidentally proves the curvature of the earth.
In this frame, the maker of the video uses the mast as a sort of ruler.
We can see that the visible size of the ship is at least three masts high.
Later in the video we find this frame.
I have drawn in similar lines to once again use the mast as a ruler to measure how much of the ship is visible. But what is this? Now the visible portion of the ship is much less than three masts high!
How can this be possible? That mast isn't growing, so its visible size should stay the same relative to the rest of the visible ship... but it doesn't.
In fact, our rule says that a significant proportion of the ship is now hidden by the waves.
Is the ship sinking? Sort of... it is "sinking" below the horizon as it travels over the curvature of the earth.
As and argument for flat earth, this video does a great job of proving a spherical earth.
n/a shmusko01 2017-05-13
this is false.
n/a polkadotgirl 2017-05-13
Well why? This is one I hear a lot and still have not gotten a good explanation.
n/a shmusko01 2017-05-13
Why what? It doesn't happen.
n/a polkadotgirl 2017-05-13
Proof?
n/a shmusko01 2017-05-13
Proof of something not happening?
Easy, go out and observe.
n/a polkadotgirl 2017-05-13
Ok...
n/a mesqueunclubsandwich 2017-05-13
Those FE videos only show objects (boats/ships usually) that haven't gone over the horizon, but that are far enough that it's difficult to see with the naked eye. Then they zoom in with a good camera/lense and pretend that this proved the Earth is a disc or whatever.
In some videos they fuck up and actually show the ship disappearing bottom first, which would be contrary to what FE suggests.
TL;DR Flat Earth BTFO
n/a AlienPsychic51 2017-05-13
BTW, please note that I was already including magnification in my example. Just being past naked eye distance isn't the same.
n/a KiwiBattlerNZ 2017-05-13
Nope.
None of those videos shows what you claim it does. Not one of them zooms in to a ship on the horizon so it can be clearly seen, then waits for it to disappear, then zooms in again to show it reappear.
What they all do is zoom in to a ship near/on the horizon, then zoom out and claim it disappeared.
What they are doing is relying on the resolution of the camera to make it seem like the ship has disappeared, when it never did.
The images that make up are video are in turn made up of pixels. Each pixel can only show one colour. When the camera is zoomed in, the ship covers many pixels, so many colours can be used to represent its shape and detail.
When the camera zooms out, the ship covers very few pixels, so only a few colours can be used to represent it. These colours are an average of the colours seen in that area of the field of view so if most of it is blue, the whole pixel becomes blue. That is how these videos are making the ship disappear.
What you will not find is a video of a clearly visible ship going over the horizon then the camera zooms in again to show that the ship comes back into view.
That is because the view of the ship is being blocked by the curvature rather than being hidden by poor resolution.
n/a polkadotgirl 2017-05-13
Did you watch the specific video I showed you? Just curious.
Otherwise, Id have to probably go to the ocean myself and try it. I have a pretty good zoom lens.
n/a KiwiBattlerNZ 2017-05-13
Yes, and I explain here why that video actually proves the earth is spherical.
n/a escalationstares 2017-05-13
No you can't ...

n/a KiwiBattlerNZ 2017-05-13
Hell... I don't think you even need to go to sea.
That first cave man that climbed to the top of a tree to see further was essentially assuming the earth is a sphere. As far back as history records, we humans have known that going higher lets you see further. Even animals know it.
They may not have fully understood why, but they sure as hell were behaving as if they lived on a sphere rather than a flat plane.
n/a escalationstares 2017-05-13
If the sun moved as claimed it would change size by a significant amount over the course of the day, which it doesn't.
n/a polkadotgirl 2017-05-13
Good point
n/a scaredshtlessintx 2017-05-13
Just had a thought....what if...like a dropped coin....it's on a slow wobble....that's how you get the ying/yang sun /moon and the tides?...I don't know...spitballing here
n/a AlienPsychic51 2017-05-13
It's one thing to make stuff up that explains some of the visual stuff as long as you maintain the story and don't go into all that much detail. It's another to try to include the tides. I haven't got a clue how FEer's explain billions of tons of water moving upwards against gravity.
n/a scaredshtlessintx 2017-05-13
Yea I don't get a lot of they're argument...the subject is just as interesting as annoying
n/a AlienPsychic51 2017-05-13
I think that it's an annoying argument. If we can't prove that the Earth is a sphere in a clear way that makes sense and is indispensable then how can we ever hope to explain anything?
Which is probably exactly the point...
The believers in the Flat Earth could be purposely fucking with us. They may be trolls just doing it for amusement. They could be Government shills here to muddy the water and make conspiracy theories look ridiculous. Course there could be those who actually buy into the bullshit.
Actually, those who buy into the bullshit are the ones that worry me the most. They would have to believe in a let's say Global for lack of a better term. A Global conspiracy that apparently involves lots and lots of people. Everyone in aviation, spaceflight, and shipping would have to be in on it. Plus, several scientific disciplines would have to be in on it as well such as astronomy, seismology, and meteorology. How screwed up are you if you think that most of the planet is lying to you?
I tried to get the ball rolling to create a new section in the sidebar for conspiracy theories that have been busted. There is a place for ones that they claim to be proven. Seems to me that there should be a place for what's been disproven as well. I got very little support and drew criticism about censorship.
Unfortunately, it's hard to argue against FE because it's hard to see for oneself. 8" of curvature over a mile is pretty difficult to detect.

Why not? It's weird that you don't feel like sharing your research with people interested to hear about it.

Eric Dubay does a great job trying to prove a lack of curvature by using observable and measurable experiments.
He provides evidence of Flat Earth belief throughout history but doesn't try to claim we're in a dome or anything other than what he can actually prove.
n/a KiwiBattlerNZ 2017-05-13
He may do a great job trying to prove it, but he consistently fails to do so.

n/a CitationDependent 2017-05-13
And if (100% sure) it were false, it would dissuade people from considering pedogate/911/OKC/War/JFK/everyfuckingthingelse.
You'd be a useful idiot to spread it.
n/a dandroid1_0 2017-05-13
Flat earth society is disinformation meant to be used exactly how you just used them. And why and how the #@$/ would people give up looking at any and all conspiracy theory just because one may be wrong?!
n/a trollz0r45 2017-05-13
Now forgive me if I'm wrong, but don't celestial bodies of planetary size have to be a sphere due to the effects of gravity on their formations during their creation? I'm not much of a physics nerd but for the Earth as well as other planets (which in my observations never seem to be mentioned, just the Earth) to be flat just seems a tad preposterous to me. Also, for those saying that it's all a ruse for the government, how so? I'm a paranoid bastard about some things but I can't find any logical or reasonable reason why exactly the government would try to take something such as a flat Earth and repress it so much. Maybe so scientists can get some grants but those aren't even worth much money and the scientists involved practically get pocket change unless if you're someone like Neil DeGrasse Tyson.
n/a olikdw 2017-05-13
Among competing hypotheses, the one with the fewest assumptions should be selected.
I'm not a physicist, but there are theories built on theories built on assumptions with a foundation of conjecture (and money) that support your argument.
n/a KiwiBattlerNZ 2017-05-13
And you think the flat earth theory is not based on a hell of a lot of assumptions?
Here is an example. They claim the sun is three thousand miles away floating above the surface of a flat earth following a circular path around the "equator".
What keeps the sun up? What accelerates it through these circles?
The accepted theory is that the Earth is being accelerated around the sun by the sun's gravity. It is travelling too fast to fall onto the sun, but too slow to escape the sun and fly off into space. The combination of the earth's velocity and the sun's gravity keeps the earth in orbit around the sun. Likewise, the moon is kept in orbit around the earth by the combination of the moon's velocity and the earth's gravity.
What is the "flat earth" explanation? As far as I have seen, they have none. They simply assume it does what they need it to do for their model to appear to work. They can't actually explain how it does it.
That's why their model fails.
n/a FORKinmyDICK 2017-05-13
It's insane how much energy you have put into this thread alone. You're just as obsessed as someone who believes in it.

My explanation is the current model suggests we're insignificant. We're on a planet rotating and flying through infinite darkness.
The Flat Earth suggests the Earth is the center of the universe, which in my opinion, implies intelligent design. Mainstream science will have you believe everything is random. Fact is, there is absolutely no explanation for the creation of human consciousness.
Also, NASA gets over $50million a day and is asking for more to go to Mars. Clear fincacial incentive right there.
n/a KiwiBattlerNZ 2017-05-13
The "flat earth" implies there is no universe, and all of it is just fakery to make us think there is. The real hoax is being perpetrated by god, apparently.
Just like the other intelligent design arguments, god is trying to trick us into thinking we're on an ancient planet in a vast universe by planting fake dinosaur fossils and creating fake stars.
Seriously, if that is true, god is an asshole.
n/a Repent_Now 2017-05-13
Umm.. or maybe the real hoax would be perpetrated by Satan, ya know, the king of deception and lies, fallen angel here on earth, banished from the Kingdom, worshipped by the illuminati
n/a KiwiBattlerNZ 2017-05-13
So satan made the earth, the "firmament" and the stars? Because it is observations of those things that tell us we live on a spherical planet surrounded by a vast universe.
Someone made this place look like something it's not, and the bible claims god made it, so if we believe the bible then god is the one trying to trick us.
n/a VocabKey 2017-05-13
"The real hoax is being perpetrated by god, apparently.'
You mean crooked governments and scientists with an agenda? I don't believe god is a white male with a big beard and lightning bolts if that's what you think. There are very different interpretations of intelligent design.
I'm genuinely curious what you believe in. What created the elements necessary for the Big Bang?
n/a KiwiBattlerNZ 2017-05-13
Well, let me start by saying the "Big Bang" theory is a pseudo-scientific creation myth invented by a Catholic priest. As a theory, it is so full of holes that it admits it can't explain the vast majority of the universe.
I believe the universe is infinite in all four dimensions. It never had a beginning, a moment of creation, and thus there is no creator. Nothing made the universe, it just is.
What the physicists call the "big bang" is just an artifact of the limit of our ability to see this infinite universe, derived from a misunderstanding of how light works.
Even Edwin Hubble said that his observations are better explained by a hitherto unknown property of light which causes it to lose energy over vast distances and times. In his mind, "redshift" did not mean movement, it meant light was losing energy.
But even if our tiny part of the universe did expand from a point, that doesn't mean it was the beginning of the universe. It just means it was the beginning of our tiny part of it.
In an infinite universe, every event - no matter how unlikely - will happen because there are an infinite number of places and an infinite amount of time for it to happen.
We just happen to be part of one of those extremely unlikely but ultimately inevitable random chances.
n/a mesqueunclubsandwich 2017-05-13
So in other words,
And
Wow where have I heard these groundbreaking arguments before 🤔🤔🤔
n/a SpaceWizardFour20 2017-05-13
If the Earth were flat the gravity would be unstable and the moon wouldn't orbit in the way it does, it would have probably collided with Earth by now. All the other planets and moons are spherical, I highly doubt Earth is a random large blue piece of paper floating in space.
n/a Glassclose 2017-05-13
Nikola tesla bruh.
n/a joe_jaywalker 2017-05-13
Not a flat-earther myself, but part of the theory is that space itself is fake which is why NASA fakes basically everything they do.
n/a PolyNecropolis 2017-05-13
Because I own a telescope. I can see other planets, their moons, track their orbits, etc. The solar system is what it is. Planets are round, and they orbit the sun, another round thing. Moons are also round and orbit planets. You can see this with your own eyes.
A good pair of binoculars or a cheap telescope will allow you to see Jupiter and the 4 largest moons; the Galilean moons.
n/a Putin_loves_cats 2017-05-13
You can see 3D object with your telescope?
n/a Strange_Me 2017-05-13
Planets rotate ya know.
Did you really need someone to tell you that?
n/a Putin_loves_cats 2017-05-13
So does a coin, when you flip it. That shit aint a sphere.
n/a Strange_Me 2017-05-13
That is flipping, not rotating. Let me guess, mars is flat too? So is the moon? Basketballs are flat too.
Seriously, no one can honestly believe flat earth/etc. It is a fun mental exercise for bored teens but beyond that is just sad.
n/a Putin_loves_cats 2017-05-13
Coins spin.
Maybe? I've never been to Mars, have you?
No? Who said they were?
Why?

n/a olikdw 2017-05-13
there are several DogCam videos that show a flat horizon from a great height. Have you seen them?
n/a KiwiBattlerNZ 2017-05-13
And what were the details of the lenses used?
If they had a very narrow field of view, they would need to be at a much greater height to show the curvature, if they had a wider field of view, they would likely introduce distortion into the image that could cause the horizon to look concave, flat or convex, depending on the angle the camera is facing.
It is very difficult to take any photo as proof of curvature or lack of curvature without knowing the precise details of the lens and the altitude the photo was taken at.
n/a cryo 2017-05-13
I think you're misinformed. The horizon is always flat (or rather: level), yes, on a spherical planet: You're looking from a vantage point and onto a circle going around you. That's level.
n/a KiwiBattlerNZ 2017-05-13
How do I know? One way is the existence of an horizon. My observations of the horizon are not explained by the flat earth theory and can only be explained by a spherical earth.
Yes, I know the flat earthers talk about perspective and vanishing points, but they are wrong.
When I am at sea level, I can only see a few miles in any direction. When I climb to the top of a large hill I can see further. When I go up in an airliner I can see for hundreds of miles.
My eyes don't change based on altitude. My eyesight doesn't get better.
The only possible explanation for this is the fact I'm standing on a very large sphere where the surface is curving down away from me in every direction. The only shape which fits that description is a sphere.
On a flat earth where the limit of my vision is determined by perspective, I would not be able to see further simply by moving to the top of a hill.
n/a VocabKey 2017-05-13
Seriously? You believe the Earth is spherical and rotating because you can see further at a higher elevation?
Why would that not be possible on a Flat Earth?
n/a KiwiBattlerNZ 2017-05-13
Here is why
At the top is a flat earth. On a flat earth I should be able to see as far as there is land to see, because it is always in view.
At the bottom is a spherical earth, however, I can only see as much land as the distance to the horizon, because the rest of it is hidden behind the curvature.
On flat earth, when I go higher, I don't see more land, because I could already see it all.
On spherical earth, when I go higher, less land is hidden behind the curve so I can see more of it.
The flat earthers try to explain this by saying that my eyesight is limited by the vanishing point, but that wouldn't change when I climb to the top of a hill, so I should still see the same distance.
We know this is not the case, and people can see a lot further simply by going higher, which proves our vision is not limited by the vanishing point, but instead is limited by the curvature of the earth.
n/a Repent_Now 2017-05-13
You really made no sense here at all but you sounded good
n/a KiwiBattlerNZ 2017-05-13
No sense, eh? But you can't refute my argument?
n/a dandroid1_0 2017-05-13
The horizon disproves a spherical earth. It's so simple. As you increase in altitude, on a ball earth the horizon would always lower in all directions. Always. It never does.
This video will show you simple, easy to understand animations of what the horizon would look like on a ball.
https://youtu.be/cJBG3H7BTNk
n/a KiwiBattlerNZ 2017-05-13
OK, so you admit the horizon will drop. You can't back out now. If I show a video that proves the horizon drops, then you have to admit the earth is not flat... right?
Here is the proof
And just in case you refuse to watch the video, here are some screenshots that prove the horizon drops the higher you go.
Horizon at about 5,000 feet altitude
Horizon at about 21,000 feet altitude
Horizon at about 34,000 feet altitude
So, given your assertion that this is only possible on a spherical earth, are you now willing to admit the earth is a sphere?
Or are you going to claim this video was faked?
n/a dandroid1_0 2017-05-13
Sure I can. You're incorrigible, no matter what proof is given to you. I'm backing out like Homer in his hedges (where's that gif?).....
n/a KiwiBattlerNZ 2017-05-13

Very simple test:
Tierra Del Fuego's longest day. Any one can confirm it. You don't need any special equipment or lots of money. Just drive on down or fly or get a livestream and you will see that it is too long for a flat earth.
Done.
n/a Strange_Me 2017-05-13
The earth isn't flat and anyone who believes it is has issues.
That means literally nothing at all.
That you are asking that here is part of the problem. Literally just do some googling. Pick up a book. Book a flight "AROUND" the world.
If people long long ago could figure out without even a tenth of the tech we have then you should probably be able to, if you actually want to, figure it out.
n/a Repent_Now 2017-05-13
Questioning something implies "issues", okay.
You provided no evidence, no argument.. we have picked up books, we have flown around the world.. it is still able to be questioned.
Do you know how many "facts" have been paid for?
You discredit him for asking a question without providing meaningful evidence yourself, simply "do what you've already done".. in his reality, he has no seen the proof with certainty and it is fair to ask a question.
n/a Strange_Me 2017-05-13

Gravity is a freemason theory used to support another freemason theory (big bang) which is used to support another freemason theory (evolution). You can't prove theories with theories, it's a convoluted mess of lies
NASA is a joke, using tethers, underwater tanks, green screens and parabolic flights to simulate weightlessness and they are the proof?

n/a DracoRaknar 2017-05-13

The sphericity of the Earth was established by Greek astronomy in the 3rd century BC, and the earliest terrestrial globe appeared from that period. The earliest known example is the one constructed by Crates of Mallus in Cilicia (now Çukurova in modern-day Turkey), in the mid-2nd century BC.

n/a Suburban_Nigga 2017-05-13
If you care anything about the levity of what's actually happening in current events this exact argument is decisive, wether it's "asking questions" or not, still discredits people speaking publicly about real lies and corruption that actually affects our way of life not the shape of the fucking earth? How does keeping that a secret benefit anyone? Only thing advantageous to this argument is to discredit people who question actual corruption and lies.
n/a AbortionBurger 2017-05-13
Okay so just because you and I are more focused on the corruption among the elite doesn't mean you should shit all over the OP for questioning other stuff. This is r/conspiracy not r/onlyoneconspiracy. There are plenty of people here with differing views and interests.

It's 50/50. Half flat and half globe. It all about compromise fellas
n/a dandroid1_0 2017-05-13
Maybe you're joking, but you may be somewhat right. Maybe a mound earth could solve a lot of problems with both models: mostly flat but a very slight curvature from Arctic to Antarctic "ring." Or put the typical flat earth map on a much larger sphere, a giant earth which is mostly hidden from us. That or this shit is as concave as a giant bowl, who knows?
n/a HempCO719 2017-05-13
The best part is that you can take some of the 'proofs' of each and infuse them onto the opposite argument, and watch the world go nuts!
n/a dandroid1_0 2017-05-13
It is nuts, though. There seems to be some problems with all these models, but also good points for each, too. I lean definitely away from the commonly taught 8000 mile wide spinning ball for sure, the earth definitely appears flat, but I've brieflly looked into concave and hollow earth and there are good points for those too. Maybe the earth appears to be whatever you think it is!
n/a mesqueunclubsandwich 2017-05-13

n/a maoej 2017-05-13

So I admit, I don't know if we are flat or round.
n/a mutilatedrabbit 2017-05-13
I am an amateur astronomer and a connoiseur of pop science and all kinds of intellectualist nonsense. there are many arenas in which I have observed evidence for the Earth's being spherical (or an oblate spheroid.)
that is how I personally "know" what the Earth's shape is. but if you want to get into epistemology, well, then. have at it. we could be here for days.
n/a toomuchpork 2017-05-13
Around 500 years ago they started accurately measuring the land. A 66' chain, stakes and a theodolite.
An acre is one chain by 10 chains.
Areas that were hard to access could be measured by triangulation. Everything got measured. Rivers mountains... everything.
When this data was compiled and compared errors occurred. Euclidian geometry did not work.
Once spherical math was utilized these errors disappeared.
And the size of this sphere? Only a few percent off what Eratosthenes calculated some 2200 years ago with one distance and two angles.
In high school physics we repeated the math involved.
So either all maps are a lie or the earth is a sphere. We knew this for fact long before we went to space or NASA was created.
