That is very unfortunate! What I say here is general note I have made from many concerts, festivals etc - none of them from GB. So please correcr me if this is not the case in GB, or especially in Manchester but...

(IMHO) Typically the ppl working and securing big events are mostly volunteers or event organizer staff. There is only few if any security professionals around.

Staff at the gates are there to prevent minor illegal activities like someone trying to enter without valid tickets, smuggling narcotics, alcohol or dangerous items (including small weapons). The audience is frisked gently and superficially. Nobody's crotch is grabbed, no-one's torso and limbs are tapped all over. Bags are opened, but only occasionally seached deep to the bottom.

When the rush-hour is over the staff does not hang around the gates with full manning. Instead they monitor the main hall. Some of them just wait the event to end so that the main area can be cleaned from pop-corns and confetti. Some may go home before the event is over.

When the audience leaves the area all exit routes are opened. Exiting is always less organized and less monitored. The most vulnerable moment.

It's amazing how they don't have or use "walk through" metal detectors at the gates. Too slow? Too expensive? One could imagine couple of kilograms steel nuts, bolts and bearing balls baked inside homemade explosives would easily trigger an alarm - if a detector was used. Obviously it wasn't...
