How to spin-proof your online profile
32 2017-07-05 by birdman5000
for those worried about being painted as crazy conspiracy theorists, etc.:
be accurate in your language. use coherent, understandable logic.
don't hang out in anger land. stay in rational land.
stay consistent, unless new data has changed your view.
let your words speak for themselves.
occasionally, if you really want your message to be heard, do something really really obviously silly and enjoy the ripple of views across your profile.
any levering of spin on scale against you will bring this same attention which will likely convert people to your POV if you've been sufficiently articulate.

I don't say anything here that I don't say in real life to my friends, family and co-workers.
Worry not, the "conspiracy theorist" label has lost all stigma, and people are waking up.
These days if you're a "conspiracy theorist" you're more likely to be thought of as being informed.

Stop worrying about upvotes.
Do not state your opinions as fact, qualify your statements and remain intellectually honest
Be willing to accept new information. Even shills sometimes use factual arguments; if you refuse to acknowledge facts you are no better than they are. This is how you separate yourself from them. They cannot, in many cases, acknowledge facts. That is the easiest way to highlight them and their brand of garbage
Don't fall for divide and conquer. This is not about partisanship, it's about the search for truth
Take breaks whenever you need to

Beautifully said. Especially this:
I don't know anything. I think a lot of things, but even when I say I know something, the best I have is an educated guess, at least insofar as the material around here.

I try to remind myself of this truth every single day.

The more I learn, the less I know that I know.
Ignorance is indolence of the mind.
Knowledge is power, yet we must strive to be the benevolent monarch; a slice of the All-father to all whom which we encounter.
Meekness is power under control.

And don't give any personal info.

or, if you're into creating false rabbitholes, you could LARP your "personal info". that's a good one too

Speak the truth unconditionally. That is the ideal.
First, stop lying. Second try and tell the truth. Third, attempt to be the Truth.
Work on yourself and let the ripples flow outward.

I always post and comment with the assumption I'm going to be doxxed or my information is going to be public eventually. It's scary to think that's going to happen eventually and it's sad I have to self moderate myself based on that.

yeah i hear you. on the other side of the coin, it's more responsible to put more consideration into what you write by thinking about what could be the end effect if someone followed my advice, or if many people did it on scale.

Definitely agree with you. I've seen many people who I thought were "shills" or "trolls" online in social media. But, the only way to fight them is with facts and primary sources.
They used to be everywhere in the NPR forums when that was a thing, and the Fox news comment sections are invested with them.
