Netflix's Punisher and the Heroin Conspiracy

Great series, but I couldn't help but wonder if there was any truth to the "CIA heroin smuggling" conspiracy in the plot.
Why are we still in Afghanistan while the opioid epidemic remains a national crisis? Why did we go into Afghanistan in the first place, and why has opioid production since then skyrocketed? Is big pharma behind the war on terror?
Is this a real thing?

I do believe so, yes.

If I'm not mistaken, they actually have to use opiums to make actual opiate pills like morphine, codeine, hydrocodone, oxycodone, fentanyl.

Yes thats true but the vast majority of the legal opiates come from Tasmania's poppy fields, and never came from poppy fields in that part of the world.

How can Tasmania cause the opioid epidemic?
1 Jazday 2017-11-19
It doesn’t , almost all opiates used in pharmaceutical products worldwide , are grown under strict controlled security in Tasmania , Australia . Much of the synthetics come from China The opioid epidemic was created by the American pharma industry and a compliant lazy medical industry handing out hi -dose addictive opiate pain killers and now this has been exacerbated by an influx of illegal imported heroin mainly from Afghanistan and Mexico as demand rises massively for heroin due to opiate scripts from a GP becomes harder and harder to get.

The pharma companies that own the Tasmanian fields 'encourage' very strong (read: over prescribe) treatment of patients.

Keyword here is "legal".
Poppy fields in Afghanistan were almost completely shut down by the Taliban by 2001. Then something happened, and over the next 10 - 17 years a massive worldwide opium epidemic coincided with the reappearance of the Afghani poppy fields.

According to the series, the op is the result of the actions of one man: William Rawlins, Agent Orange (oh the irony) I would think if it did happen IRL, it would also be the result of one man abusing authority and concealing the activity from the Soldiers tricked into doing the transport. It wouldnt work if alot of service members knew because moral integrity still exists in the service.

America invaded Afghanistan for 2 reasons: massive reserves of lithium and other rare metals, and; massive amounts of heroin to sell to pharmaceutical companies.

They run dope from afghanistan to southern russia to make money and destabilize russia. Russia is in the grips of one of the worst heroin problems in history and has the most new AIDS infections of anywhere on earth.

Just finished the first season around 2 this morning (yeah I binge) & it was such a fresh breath of air to see a show like this discuss topics that the average American citizen can only consider to be a Hollywood production.

And you have to consider that release was delayed because of the LV story, which could mean they edited stuff out.

As far as the heroin plot point in The Punisher that was refrenced from the infamous Vietnam heroin story. When H was smuggled from South East Asia into the USA through the dead soldiers coffins coming back from Vietnam. It was in the 2006 movie "American Gangster" where Frank Lucas made millions from that scheme. True story, don't know if in fact any drugs came in through Afghanistan to here that way.
