His brother(or brother in law) lives in Maui, sent texts to family members on the mainland saying goodbye in wake of the missle announcement, the texts have been deleted from the brother/in law that sent them and the people he sent them to
This is another reason having an FM radio transceiver is a good idea. If SHTF, most communication lines will either be shut down or won't work, but radio waves should still reach loved ones (assuming they won't be jammed, of course).
What make/model phone / mobile os? jailbroken/rooted?
What carriers? all the same?
Actual sms or imessage/other?
On Monday, is that when you first noticed the messages missing or could they have "vanished" before Monday?
Are any of those phones company provided or all personally owned? Company phones (can) have 100% customization/control to change anything on the phone with mobile device management.

When I have bad reception this happens (I basically live in a basement (they euphemistically call it a "garden unit")).
Maybe because so many people were texting and calling at the same time the texts didn't go through?

The texts went through fine, they VANISHED two days later...without anyone deleting.

Obvious questions:

What carriers? all the same?
