Youtube creeps me the fuck out
94 2018-02-11 by LionHenry
My familiy just talked about tetris while I was around (carrying my mobile) and five minutes later Youtube recommended me Videos about some Tetris World Finals or something like that. I never cared for tetris and I've also never googled it.
If this is a coincidence, do not tell me the odds...

Get used to it

It's comical. Edward Snowden attempted to warn people about this years ago. Sadly Americans either didn't know who he was, or thought it was a traitor. Apathy has gotten us here.
1 luberk 2018-02-11
Snowden was a limited hangout to normalize and desensitize the global populace to the idea of dragnet surveillance.

This is the conclusion I've come to as well.

Same here. You can't trust these any of these people that have the MSM media props up even Assange. Whether its Trump, or Elon Musk, Putin, Zuckerberg. They are all apart of your programming.

So. I had a problem with my foot. The doc told me to get a pair of house slippers vs walking barefoot. Totally random/odd thing. I talk last week to my gf in my house about it (phone in room).
I never searched web for them, or email etc. I just drive to a store and got what I needed.
This week, here on reddit... I’m getting sponsored adds for high end slippers.. like the kind needed for my specific foot trouble.
Out of all the adds to show me. They pick slippers. Hmm. Lucky I guess.
1 Detra3712 2018-02-11
Did you buy the slippers in the store with cash or card. If it was card then it’ll explain the fact that amazon and other online shops keep track of what you buy, with your cards, if not. Then holy shit mate, fucking listening on our conversation to target ads. Heard a story about a guy chatting via email with his friend mentioning going to japan, out of nowhere google started giving him ads on cheap flights to japan. Google scans your emails, others scan your messages, Facebook knows who you are before you like the 50th picture, and now apple is listening to you. 1984 doesn’t seem so unreal anymore.
1 Treedodger 2018-02-11
I bought with a card that I’ve used online before.
1 SpecialSause 2018-02-11
Store compile what you buy and link them to whatever profile they have on you and sell it to ad agencies. You know those "customer rewards cards"? They do the same thing but they can do it when you use cash as well.
Facebook goes further. They can link you through the GPS in your phone if you are frequently in the same area as someone else. Also, if you connect to someone's WiFi they can then link you to that person.
1 russianbot01 2018-02-11
Wait until you just think of Tetris then you see an ad. Or the ads just make you think of Tetris out of the blue. :p
1 OT-GOD-IS-DEMIURGE 2018-02-11
same shit here. I was thinking about if someone ever invented a tool that can mold/shape itself around any lugnut/screw/etc size. Next day an ad pops up with something like that, totally blew my mind. I think they actually have thought reading tech in secret
1 FeastForCows 2018-02-11
Erm...that's what ads are supposed to do in the first place.
1 russianbot01 2018-02-11
Telepathy based ads

Youtube is a mess.../r/ElsaGate
1 Ski7les420 2018-02-11
its cause you allow youtube to access tour mic and camera. I never get those ads cause i have everything turned off on my phone.
1 garyp714 2018-02-11
Elsagate is something else though. Like an internal war over ad revenue. Creepy as fuck.

1 asailorssway 2018-02-11
That is fucking cool. Thank you.
1 Oftowerbroleaning 2018-02-11
Even if you don't allow access they probably still do it anyway
1 Ski7les420 2018-02-11
I never see those ads on my devices. so maybe its working.
1 asailorssway 2018-02-11
Or maybe the recordings and data are just not entered into the ad creating algorithms.
1 OhHolyOpals 2018-02-11
I had an eye appointment today and all the ads I’ve been served the past few days are all eyeglass shops. I have a Microsoft account linked on my phone and had a confirmation email sent to me late last week. It’s mind boggling how individualised it is.... like i forgot about the eye appointment but google ads didn’t? the ads actually reminded me about the appointment. Also I never put it in my calendar on my phone. Simply received an appointment confirmation email.
1 Ski7les420 2018-02-11
I suggest pen and paper to remind yourself.
1 crabsneverdie 2018-02-11
Why?
1 erinclod 2018-02-11
Lolol Facebook did this to me last night. No surprise there!
1 Deckard256 2018-02-11
I keep those apps closed and my battery set to low power mode so things aren't running in the background. It's happening to me pretty regularly when I let apps stay open.
1 brock_lee 2018-02-11
A while back I started getting tons of ads for truck driving schools. I honestly don't know what I typed or talked about but I must have said something because all of a sudden every ad I saw on Facebook and other places work for truck driving schools.
Another time I was driving past a new pizza place in town, and I mentioned it to my son, and I had my phone with me of course. The next day, sure enough, I start getting answer that very pizza place.
1 bogpiII 2018-02-11
Not trying to be a dick but is this the first time you have had this happen? It's nothing new.
1 D00bage 2018-02-11
Android OS powered products are famous for this. Even if you turn off certain features in your device Google (being a data mining company above all else) apparently gets a pass when it comes to this creepy shit.
1 evilast 2018-02-11
Ive used Disconnect for a few years now on my android phones and have never had any targeted marketing appear where as before I had it it used to happen fairly regularly. I mainly follow tattoo artists on Instagram and I get all sorts of random adds and suggestions that seemed like they were targeting an Asian woman. I'm a late 30s white guy who likes videogames tattoos and fringe culture but never get any advertising for my interests. Ive also tried talking about random items for days to get facebook to suggest it to me but that never happens either.
1 Mrexreturns 2018-02-11
Yes, i've opened an alt account in facebook and my dad's fb was instantly suggested, it was creepy as fuck.
1 Whaduzitake 2018-02-11
I had a similar thing happen when I first got FB. It suggested people to me for "friends" that I had e-mailed (from a yahoo acct) years ago, these e-mails had even been deleted, so FB is getting info from yahoo, too. It was creepy. Same thing happens on Linkedin.
1 leggobucks 2018-02-11
The other day I was THINKING about how I could use some Clorox cleaning wipes for my bathroom, and later that day I see a Reddit ad for Clorox cleaning wipes. I really don't know what to think of it, but Clorox is such a random product so that's one hell of a coincidence.
1 Pubelication 2018-02-11
Stop thinking.
1 crabsneverdie 2018-02-11
Hmmm I wonder what it is, it must mean something, right?

Doesn't really apply when companies openly admit to spying on people to target advertisements to them.

https://www.popularmechanics.com/technology/security/a14533262/alphonso-audio-ad-targeting/
Honestly, I don't see the issue. If you don't want to be spied on, don't get a smart phone. You're literally carrying around a microphone, camera, and gps tracking device on your person 24 hours a day 7 days a week. No one is forcing you to do that... yet. If you don't want vampires, don't invite them in.
1 thebeefytaco 2018-02-11
It happens, but far less often than people think on here. Constantly running the mic and uploading the data would kill your battery and show up in the power usage log.
1 gilletprick 2018-02-11
You're so wise
1 thebeefytaco 2018-02-11
Just sharing a link, man. No need to be a sarcastic douche.
1 oldmonk90 2018-02-11
This is just your confirmation bias. Try talking about something random every day and see how many times you see it suggested on youtube. If it happens every day you are onto some thing and proof to back it up. If not then it is as you said coincidence.
1 Kind_Of_A_Dick 2018-02-11
It could be a coincidence, pattern recognition. You might have seen ads for Tetris previously, but you never focused on them. You only focused on them this time because of the recent conversation.
Now that's the "You might be over-thinking it" possibility. Let's look at the other possibility, a thought many here share and that it's no coincidence.
I'm curious how to test it. I propose a possible method to test this, and this will likely only work to prove it to you because part of this test requires no digital or verbal mention of the subject. What you need to do is go somewhere away from your digital devices and bring a pen and paper.
Ponder something you absolutely do not need, like for example if you live in an apartment building then a lawnmower would work great for this. Or maybe you don't need clothes pins, because you just never do. Write this down, put it somewhere like your wallet. Try to be as specific as you can, like if you choose stuff for your kitchen pick soup bowls or copper pots; just to leave nothing to chance.
Put that somewhere safe and then watch your ads for the next few days as you peruse social media. Don't type or search for it, and don't mention it in conversation when you are around digital devices of any sort. If you see an ad for that specific item in those next few days, pick a new object or thing. The goal is to try and create a control group of sorts, a reference point.
After you've carefully watched to make sure you don't get ads, somehow work it into a conversation or just talk to yourself about it while around your phone/computer. Do not search for it or otherwise trigger ads through action, because you want to make sure you're being listened to. If you see those ads right after talking about it, then there's a good possibility you're being listened to.
Not sure if this sounds like a decent test though.
1 LEGALinSCCCA 2018-02-11
I don't get this because I've set my phone up that way. You probably can to. Why do so few know this? I play with my settings all the time.
1 ZombieRightsActivist 2018-02-11
That's just scary. I would check your app permissions immediately. Make sure your apps do not have permission to use your microphone. It might be another app other than YouTube.
1 zhanx 2018-02-11
its not. I was talking about new taps for my kegorator and my wife who watches nothing like I do had some videos recommended about taps.
1 Mnemonomorph 2018-02-11
I have the opposite problem. I get adverts for pregnancy and ovulation tests all the damn time. Each and every time, I speak clearly into my phone "Google, you moron, I don't want children." Still, adverts for bloomin' baby stuff... I wouldn't mind if they bothered to show me stuff I might be interested in...
1 pancakeshakenbake 2018-02-11
I think it's listening for keywords not context. It hears "children" and serves up child related products based on other demographic info about you like age and location.
1 Mnemonomorph 2018-02-11
Well Google knows my age and marital status so it just assumes. They're playing themselves.
1 Smiley_Iris 2018-02-11
Can any of you go a day without a cell phone or other such products?
1 gilletprick 2018-02-11
You're on Reddit man. Don't act like you're above it
1 frikkinfrakk 2018-02-11
Any app that you allow access to your camera, microphone will keep those things open without your knowledge. Facebook, Instagram and YouTube all gear ads based on keywords you say in a run of a day. I noticed this over a year ago
1 irrelevant_spam 2018-02-11
Personally, I just stay logged out of Google when browsing Youtube and have browser history delete on exit. Targeted advertising doesn't show up much then.
1 zenmasterzen3 2018-02-11
Funny when victims of gangstalking complained of this kind of feedback loop everyone was like "haha you're nuts" but now that it's happening to them ...
1 EvilSporkOfDeath 2018-02-11
The thing about these sort of coincidences (if it is a coincidence), is you don't notice the times where the coincidence doesnt happen. Think about how many conversations you've had when you're carrying your phone that YouTube didn't suggest similar content afterwards
1 favouritoy 2018-02-11
This is an example of confirmation bias. You only noticed the one time, by pure coincidence, YouTube showed something related to what you were taking about, but discounting all the other times YouTube didn't react to your conversation. I'd get paranoid if it happens 50% of the time.
1 GeneralRAAMsies 2018-02-11
awww man Tetris is the shit man!
1 musselshirt67 2018-02-11
The other day I was thinking, "I need to start playing guitar again, might as well bust out rocksmith on the ps4 for a bit". Didn't say anything to anyone, didn't mention it in text. Later that evening I get a pop up from amazing telling me rocksmith is on sale.. I already own it, but it was fucking creepy.
1 adambellford 2018-02-11
It's a common place now. Few years ago it starts. How had not you noticed?
1 CSymph 2018-02-11
Similar thing happened to my friend and me. We were reminiscing on an old video we hadnt seen in years and started watching some let's plays or whatever. Lo and behold, that vid popped up in our recommended.
Additionally, we were in incognito mode (not porn, long story) and it still showed up.

1 vespertained 2018-02-11
WTF.
The Tetris World Finals are on???
1 Glueman71 2018-02-11
Come on. You haven't read the terms of agreement? I never read them, but in my app manager, under the specific app (in this case YouTube) it clearly states what you have allowed. And, surprise, you basically give up the right to control your devices. Among things you're allowed ; full use of camera and mic. The ability to read and delete data on sd-cards, full access to contact lists and so on. And this goes for apps from all major companies, the smaller ones tend to be not so severe. The days of privacy are long gone.
1 missdingdong 2018-02-11
It's everywhere. I was talking about my niece and also about a kitten I found soon after my niece was born. Both of them had a skin tag in the exact same place. Then I get an email trying to sell me a skin tag removal product. So many similar things. For sure much spyware/adware on our devices are solely for corporate profit.
1 Madrenoche 2018-02-11
Its beyond me how people are still surprised their phone is listening to their conversations and logging their search history. When you download a program its clear as day in the permission list. It then says please click the box if you understand that we are going to listen to your conversations, take your contact list, log your search history. . And so on and so on.
It just kills me people are buying Alexia like it's going to make their life better. In surprised they don't sell the thing for like $10.00 and the government pay the rest. Its a CIA, FBI, Leo wet dream
1 LionHenry 2018-02-11
It's not that i'm suprised... it's more like a proof that they actually do it.
1 gilletprick 2018-02-11
You're on Reddit man. Don't act like you're above it
