I never understood why he would use a trip code. It's completely dependent on 4chan not being compromised, when Q could just have easily used PKE signing with digests.

Is it 8chan? I haven't followed Q at all for a month at least, and even then I never found any reason to give it much stock. The decision to use trip codes is remarkably stupid for verifying identity on the internet. PGP is by far superior, and doesn't require an intermediary. Publish a public key, and sign every post with the private key, including the digest.

The fact that Q doesn't use this makes me seriously doubt the person knows what they're doing. Not that using it would at all prove the claims of being an insider with knowledge, but not using it or something equivalent is a huge red flag.

Yes, wikileaks was using PGP keys to sign and verify their official releases. It's definitely shady that he doesn't have access to his private key anymore, and I don't know that he ever gave a satisfactory explanation.

I think it's more accurate to say someone claiming to be Q did so. Without PGP or an equivalent method, there's no way to say the person/group claiming to be Q now is the original person/group.

It's pretty standard in the infosec and privacy communities. It's the same principle behind tls/https, and how Snowden and Assange communicate securely with journalists and sources.

The thing with Q is that if he's real, or even if he's not I guess, the intel agencies know who he/they are. He's only really anonymous to the chanfags and the people that follow him, which makes it look like a con game.
