yes when Reddit was just a baby i assumed responsibility for "The Bible" on Reddit, creating /r/TheBible

at the time, i was more or less an atheist,

but it just seemed like a good topic that would be relevant over time, as opposed to posting about the latest political scandal that will be forgotten about next week

9 years later, i have a bible on my desk, in between my keyboard and my monitor screen

as an atheist, i spent about 2 years debating christians in a chat room called "GIAM" (God is a Myth)

the atheists taught me a lot about critical thinking, evidence, logic, reason, and how to recognize and avoid logical fallacies

the christians taught me a lot about how to be kind to people on the internet

i was impressed by and attracted to their calm temperament, in the face of my militant atheist hostility

i found it difficult to be as aggressive with the christians as i would have liked, because they were too kind for me to bully

the bible, as a book, is very important to many fields of study, and is passed down from generation to generation

it occured to me that 90% of my friends and neighbors are christians, regardless of my own beliefs or disbeliefs

and that it would be foolish of me to ignore the fact that religion is so important to so many people

so i had better do my due diligence, and try to discover what it is that makes christians believe what they believe

so i read the proverbs, which seemed to be truth

it also occurred to me that i was surrounded by a ubiquitous christian culture, which becomes quite obvious around christmas time

that i had better understand their language, beliefs, customs, and culture

and so took an active interest in trying to understand what people believe

at the time /r/thebible was created, there was virtually no discussion of the bible on reddit, and i know because i looked at the time

i know very little about either the Bible, the Torah, or the Quran

i do search social media for chatter about the bible, and look up verses that people quote, so that i can understand their context

i did recently watch a video that was "intro to Talmud" by a real rabbi. look at the rack of books behind him!
