Has Reddit struck a nerve? Reddit character assassination by CNN's Anderson Cooper over /r/jailbait. Accuses Reddit of spreading child pornography.
141 2011-09-30 by PNWd
In case you missed all the fuss.
I think we've all heard the gossip that Anderson Cooper was recruited by the CIA right out of Yale, right? Well, even if that's not true, Anderson Cooper sure has a hard-on for Reddit right now...perhaps he's been surfing too much /r/jailbait???
It comes to mind that there has quite possibly been posts of a certain nature (in /r/conspiracy or /r/politics?) that may be upsetting to certain members of the establishment, and I can't think of a more suitable (and predictable) tactic than to muddy Reddit's credibility by accusing us of being CP distributors.
What do you guys think? Is Cooper just pulling this one out of his ass for sensationalism's sake, or does someone have an axe to grind?

they cant pay enough people to shill for them on the site anymore, so they are trying to discredit reddit. they fear the power if we organize. esp our ties to occupy wall street. now if someone brings up reddit seriously a talking head can now dismiss this site as that site that distributes cp. esp with all that double talk that bitch was going on about "straddles the line" and "hiding behind the first amendment"
29 killzy707 2011-09-30
I have to copy-paste the top comment:
"I wonder what reddit did that's pissing off corporate america. CNN doesn't report military contractors raping underage Iraqi girls. They don't report CPS molesting little girls. They report a group of people using reddit to comment on teenager girls in bikinis to attack reddit."

And notice, they never actually showed any picture, so nobody watching Cooper had any real idea of what he was talking about, or if his statements were legitimate at all. No evidence was presented.

this could be really good for reddit if it gets the people here to realise their is a conspiracy working against the site. So many of them try and shoot down people like us but when it happens to them they might be more sympathetic & inquisitive.

PATRIARCHY IS KILLING MY BUZZ
edit: using the term is not inherently misogynistic, however, attempting to control others by labeling their (innocuous)speech as hateful is in fact an attempt to control their actions, which can easily be viewed as "matriarchal"(in the light of a feminist attempting control) and thus, against the goal of egalitarianism. your time would better be served combating the use of the term "dick', which is quite misandristic, and very much prevalent.
misandristic is not recognized by my spell check as a legitimate word, MATRIARCHY.

Well if you think about it this is a site that has organized protests, outed police brutality every single day, smashed news organizations, supported information leaks, and shit on politicians from every side of the political spectrum for doing the people wrong. This is a site made up of real people who (in between rage comics and cat pics) are standing up for other real people.
This hivemind way of thinking is bringing people up and bringing establishments down even if people don't think they are actively participating in doing so. Thus, a smear campaign from the establishment was in order and the scarlet red letter of 21st century is the accusation of CP. The accusation doesn't even have to be remotely accurate, it's something that American rubes can rally against and it's currently the easiest way to paint an entity in a negative light.
This is a large site that does not jive with the establishment's goals and thus it was smeared. Simple as that.
9 ronintetsuro 2011-09-30
More importantly, once an entity is successfully smeared with CP in the public mind, nothing they have said or done (past, present and future) is valid. People will always default back to the CP accusation and ignore facts.
This must be squashed immediately.
1 knowless 2011-09-30
the above statement can be held in a court of law as an admission of trafficking child pornography.

I'm going to be the most insensitive asshole for saying this... But I'm not surprised Anderson Cooper is offended by /r/jailbait when he wouldn't know what's appealing about a teen girl.
6 dmareddit 2011-09-30
You're right. As a Vanderbilt, he can't really admit about his sexual orientation.
What irony i see is he used to be on the middle school/high school show Channel 1. His target audience was r/jailbait in the 90s.
2 4AM 2011-09-30
There are several former Channel 1 people that are currently on mainsteam news including Lisa Ling. I know there are at least 3 more, but I cannot remember their names as I do not watch mainstream morning news often, only incidentally from time to time.
1 Sarah_Connor 2011-09-30

1 d3rp_diggler 2011-09-30
Gloria Vanderbilt is his mother. The Cooper name is of course from his father, Wyatt Emory Cooper.
17 Bacore 2011-09-30
Jailbait is not child porn.... it is no different than seeing those same underage teens walking down the mall wearing short shorts with slogans like "Juicy" or "Sweet" written across their butts. Te problem is not Reddit but the parents who buy and allow those kids to go out in public dressed like hooker wanna-bes.
Reddit has been showing up at Wall Street... I wonder if this is a purposeful discredit or if Anderson is really that concerned?
8 [deleted] 2011-09-30
Liberal reddit has been showing up at Wall Street.
Conservative reddit is taking over the frontpage in their absence.

4 tttt0tttt 2011-09-30
It's about mind control. The images in the jailbait site are all images of people wearing clothes. They are not porn. Cooper and his ilk are concerned that someone might get excited looking at them. He is worried about what someone might think, not about the actual images. WTF? Why would he be concerned about what someone else is thinking? Why would he presume that they are thinking naughty thoughts, unless he is thinking naughty thoughts himself?
7 thinkforyourself 2011-09-30

2 UglyWesternBaby 2011-09-30
Exactly. It always seems to be those who shout loudest against something are the most turned on by it. Look at the family values christian party guy here in New Zealand who got busted for being a kiddy-fiddler.
2 Sarah_Connor 2011-09-30
Show the guy /r/picsofdeadkids and see how he runs with that, as well as GW and nsfw and porn etc....
There are a lot of /r/ that he could raise a stink over - but the accusation of CP is low hanging fruit, which will be used in the future thusly:
"...the hacker had posted to the online forum Reddit.com, which is a popular site among hackers and political activists and has entire forums dedicated to things such as jailbait - pictures of barely dressed teens which site users comment on..."
So they will use the underbelly of reddit to discredit users and the site itself. This is just the begining of the setup.

1 ikilledyourcat 2011-09-30
interesting point
1 Book8 2011-09-30
It is not that I don't see the beauty, in fact, I love to watch mother nature bait her traps for young men... with women; and their endless forms of beauty. To place body issues on a ten year old girl, and all the fears it creates, is sad. Can't the advertisers just let them be children?
2 Bacore 2011-09-30
If young women's photos didn't sell, they would stop using them. The blame goes to mothers wanting their little children to be "stars" and "glamorous fashion models.... Barbies before their times... or who do not stop the children from responding to the role models on tv... to blame Reddit for jailbait when every magazine, tv show and other media does the same thing is silly.
0 TinyZoro 2011-09-30
I dont see the issue. Surely a naked 10 year old is something that is ok too? I think we all need to relax a bit.
15 vemrion 2011-09-30
All those Occupy Wall Street headlines on the front page might have upset the Powers That Be after they went through all that trouble to orchestrate a media blackout.
I think reddit's corporate masters would be upset except that this will probably cause a traffic spike and many new /r/jailbait subscribers.
14 DoctorMiracles 2011-09-30
Slow news day... or smokescreen to hide actual news happening... anyone heard more about the Alaskan rocket test or the Denver VIP meet?
Most likely the attack is intended towards Conde Nast itself; maybe someone forgot to give some courtesy or refused to help with something or intends to publish something CNN's owners didn't like. A first shot against a relatively popular but still minor organ of the Nast media conglomerate could be interpreted as a nice warning.

8 tttt0tttt 2011-09-30
I think there's something more to it. The whole child porn charge is just a blind. This is someone big at CNN deciding to go after Reddit, for some reason. Maybe it's a general push to smother alternative news sites, and quell free speech. The two yes-women who agreed with everything Cooper said seemed to be reciting from a script they had memorized. What hypocrites! I see this as an attack on free speech -- it's got nothing at all to do with porn. As usual, porn is just being used to stir up the emotions of the sleeping masses who listen to Mr. Vanderbilt stutter through his little show.
3 BenCelotil 2011-09-30
Child porn is the simplest and easiest tool to use in a smear campaign.
You don't even have to provide proof, you just have to draw a vague link between CP and the target and let people's imaginations conjure up the worst scenarios imaginable.

I think it's just a matter of time before some of these subreddits are brought into a more mainstream attention. There are some pretty weird/creepy things in here. I'm glad I can chose not to have them on my frontpage, but I'm sure there are plenty of folks that spend all day in their underwear hitting F5. :C~~~~~ BARF
EDIT - I did just hear that they talked to the same guy about FREE PIZZA and lauded how wonderful Reddit was. Interesting. One thing likely lead to the next in the "research." Meaning: "When I'm done with this eating this pizza in my undies and hitting F5, I need to come up with another story ASAP!!"
5 simon99ctg 2011-09-30
The word "research" has ceased to have all meaning for anyone who calls themself a journalist these days (if ever..)
3 digger_ex_pat 2011-09-30
The word journalist ceased to have any meaning years ago.
4 istara 2011-09-30
Many of us had made this point before, that Reddit was going to be slurred by the "taint" of /r/jailbait and other similar subreddits, and that Conde Nast would likely suffer by association.
Everyone that bleats on about the legality of /r/jailbait fails to miss the point that just because something is legal doesn't mean it isn't fairly unpleasant (eg coprophagia) and even hugely unethical. Also, at the end of the day who verifies that all those pictures are over 18? And do they have the permission of their subjects to be posted in what is clearly a masturbatory/pornographic context?
Whether they are easily accessible elsewhere is besides the point. They are collated here, or links to them are, and that affects the perception of the whole community.
3 meatwhisper 2011-09-30
I agree wholeheartedly. It's pretty much the same as having a subreddit about drowning puppies. It's their legal right, but the people who would have interest in that are basically forcing us all into an awkward "guilt by association" issue when we search the keyword "puppies."
2 DragonHunter 2011-09-30
Intentionally drowning puppies is hardly legal in the US and many other countries. Don't you remember that video of the girl throwing the puppies into the water? Reddit helped track her down and get arrested in some former Soviet bloc country.
1 [deleted] 2011-09-30
Kindly don't lump those who enjoy looking at 15 year-olds in bikinis in with puppy killers. There is nothing legal about killing puppies. Moreso, if you think checking out the odd highschooler here and there is in any way on the same level of moral awfulness as murdering puppies...wow.
1 meatwhisper 2011-09-30
Not comparing them by any means, simply saying, as you pointed out yourself... if I want to search for "college/teen" adult material online, I certainly don't appreciate suddenly finding a link to a 10 year old in a swimsuit.
3 biderjohn 2011-09-30
reddit is owned by the conglomerate that owns vanity fair he said. maybe it has something to do with that. maybe reddit will be put up for sale. maybe we could buy it and make it reader owned?
3 [deleted] 2011-09-30
They made a buck somehow. CNN...er...Time Warner...had to know the mere mention of teenage poon would drive their salacious (kidnappin', OJ, Casey Anthony-loving ) viewers to Reddit en masse, to judge for themselves, the veracity of the very possibility of said poon.
That would make Anderson Cooper a poon salesman. Pimp, if you will.
"Time Warner is the largest media conglomerate in the world, with holdings including: CNN, the CW (a joint venture with CBS), HBO, Cinemax, Cartoon Network, TBS, TNT, America Online, MapQuest, Moviefone, Warner Bros. Reddit is a bit too much of a common grounds area, a free-wheeling kind of place where people can share ideas, links etc... and that makes it a target for people who hate free speech and liberty.
I dont go to every subreddit, nor do I want to. Even here on conspiracy there are some wing-nut theories, but I have also got thinking about a lot of things... and the fact i got thinking is the reason so many do not like this place.

1 StringyLow 2011-09-30
Here's a synopsis of the interview
1 Sabremesh 2011-09-30
Methinks the reddit perv brigade doth protest too much. So Anderson Cooper's using a very "inclusive" definition of child pornography. Perhaps some of the /r/jailbait pedophiles, sorry pedants, prefer the term "underage erotica"? What he's saying is broadly correct, though, because there's some very dubious content in that sub-reddit.
1 anghellic 2011-09-30
Doesn't he realize that bad press is good press. I wonder how many more viewers r/jailbait received after this. Brilliant media..once again.
1 kbsnugz 2011-09-30
Jailbiat at one time was run by different mods that had a clear set of rules and would remove posts that broke them. It was shut down & banned a few months ago (Early May I think) and then was re-opened between a few weeks to a month later with a different group of admin's / mods. And now a few months after it was reopend, with new mods, it's on Anderson Coopers show used to paint the site in a bad light which I find rather interesting (almost like it was planned since it closed an was reopened with new admin/mods)
I know this because there was a thread in r/circlejerk that discussed this happening and how it transpired. One of the original mods was posting in the r/circlejerk thread. The person comes staright out and says something along the lines of "I was a mod of this r/subreddit until it was banned today, this is what happened and this is how we have been conducting ourselves" (forget his handle but I think it was lordvobus {sp?})
I'm surprised the fact it was banned at one point about 2 months ago has not been mentioned yet since this is r/conspiracy (should be able to search reddit for the relevant threads refering to the sub reddit being banned/unbanned)
1 [deleted] 2011-09-30

0 Lobotobots 2011-09-30
You're paranoid.
Perceived pedophiles are great fodder for news outlets. Anderson gets more viewers when sex and children are mentioned.
He's also counting on your response to this to drive his hits up. If it's popular topic in terms of number of viewers, he will use reddit for hits again.
Enjoy feeding his family.
1 PNWd 2011-09-30
No, I'm actually quite the opposite.
No shit? You know who else is fond of this method? I'll let you guess.
Woah, back up...
Let me be sure I understand you correctly. You're saying I shouldn't draw attention to AC's sensationalism and gross overcharacterization of reddit because it will drive up hits on the CNN website, which in turn will help pay AC's salary?
I hope what they're paying you is enough to ease your conscience.
1 Lobotobots 2011-09-30
You have no argument, and did not refute my point.
1 PNWd 2011-09-30
I think I have an incredibly strong argument. Why not go after 4chan (that has actual CP posted to it every day) or any number of the websites that actually host the images that get posted to /r/jailbait? Because obviously someone has an axe to grind against reddit. If you can't see that, you are either wildly disillusioned or you are working to try to control the opposition.
Furthermore, you clearly didn't notice that I linked to a reddit search for "Anderson Cooper" in my self post, and since I didn't link directly to AC's site or any of his affiliate sites, I am not actually driving up traffic for him and he receives no revenue from my post. You argument has sunken friend, and the failboat has sailed.
0 Lobotobots 2011-09-30
So Cooper is the first pawn in the onslaught of anti-reddit activity that is designed to undermine the community and destroy it because governments are terrified of the wrong threads getting a thousand or so upvotes?
